BJP's political aspirations may drown in flood victims' ire | After 3 months, no word from Union Govt on compensation | | Akshay Azad Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 2: The soaring aspirations of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) to win clear majority in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections may be washed away in the ire of flood victims, who have been waiting for the last nearly three months but there is no word from Union Government led by Narendra Modi, on providing any compensation to them. Sources informed Early Times that according to the details furnished by Union Ministry of Home Affairs, it has been maintained that a total of 282 humans and 61,326 cattle have been lost in floods besides 6.48 lakh hectares cropped area was affected and 2.53 lakh houses had been reported damaged due to floods/ landslides in state. Sources further said that the Union Government has so far released an amount of Rs. 94.33 Crore, in advance, from SDRF. "Besides Rs. 1000 Crore under Special Plan Assistance (SPA) for flood relief and rehabilitation, an amount of Rs. 570 Crore for rebuilding of damage houses and Rs. 175 Crore for damaged hospitals from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, but so far there was no word from Union Government to provide any compensation to victims. In a recent communication sent by Union Government to State Government, former has explicitly made it clear that financial assistance so far provided was only for relief and not for any compensation. "The delay on part of BJP led Union Government to announce any compensation is likely to impact performance of party in entire Valley and in some parts of Jammu, badly struck by floods", political pundits have opined. "On one hand Union Government has been making announcements to announce new financial package for Kashmiri Pandits, financial package for POK refugees, besides construction of major projects in state, which is sheer violation of MCC but the silence of Union Government and delay in announcing and providing compensation to affected families will definitely impact the vote bank of party in state", they averred. Pertinently, on November 27, Union Government had announced that they were likely to announce soon a comprehensive package for 36000 displaced POK families and on same day Union Government had also announced to provide a new package to Kashmiri Pandits. Major political parties of state including Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference had also criticized Union Government for what they termed the response of Union Government as grossly inadequate, tardy, cruelly indifferent. |
