Triangular contests likely to spring surprise results | Udhampur, Reasi | | Early Times report
Udhampur/Reasi, Dec 2: While Jammu's nine assembly segments polled to elect their candidates today, two important constituencies viz Udhampur and Reasi that too was included into the contest, however presented fluctuating hang of the peoples' choice regarding the poll prospects of the candidates in the fray. Both constituencies presenting a unique contest are allegedly seemed poised for fractured mandate to all candidates. The reason being division of voters' loyalty as far as contesting candidates and their parties are concerned. In Udhampur,70 kilometres from Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party that had won 2002 and 2008 elections, people vying for a change in system seem to be more open to options for the choice of candidates including JKNPP, BJP and even the independent in the fray.In the last contest, though BJP and JKNPP took the loins share of vote percentage with Panthers Mankotia clinching the seat, this time round the visible divide among the voters of BJP candidate Pawan Khajuria and breakaway BJP senior leader Pawan Kahjuria is a strong buzz. "While Pawan Khajuria had connected with senior BJP leaders and got the ticket to fight, Pawan Gupta was the grassroot level BJP workers who has the ground connect. Mankotia has his clout, but the wave for demand of change has shown its teeth in the constituency. Also Narender Modi's rally here had left an impacting dent also," said Rohit Kumar, 31, a provision store owner in Udhampur city. Pawan Gupta, son of BJP old horse of Udhampur who won the 1996 seat on BJP ticket, is fighting as an independent candidate that brings a strong triangular contest in Udhampur. However, the grass root demand of the people is overall development . Reasi, 65 kilometres from Jammu also has almost the identical problem facing the voter which also voted in a triangular contest between Congress; Jugal Kishore Sharma, BJP's Ajay Nanda and Independent Baldev Raj.Baldev Raj of 2008 BJP turned out to be a smart winner by trouncing Congress' Jugal Kishore Sharma, though having listed his own record in Reasi and also riding Amaranth land row wave to some extent was caught in cross voting fiasco and shown doors by the party. He was later included, but denied ticket forcing him to contest independent.Ajay Nanda is contesting on BJP ticket. "While there are pressing needs to develop this hilly terrain for a holistic improvement, entire Reasi had stood in unison to vote for change before the release of mandate to candidates. The divide in BJP is working here as anti-incumbency for party which may scatter the vote share and produce some surprising results," said Ajay Kumar, 26 of Pouni village in Reasi. Meanwhile as good voter turnout was witnessed at most of the polling booths in both the constituencies, its peoples' final verdict that would matter as to whether they have succeeded in getting their chance fair of electing a candidate for change or not. |
