Early Times Report

HANDWARA, Dec 02: Enthusiasm was palpable in Handwara assembly constituency as voters turned out in plenty during the second phase of polling in the ensuing assembly elections in the state. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Ghulam Mohi-Ud Din Sofi, National Conference (NC) Choudhry Ramzan, and Peoples Conference (PC) Sajad Gani Lone, are contesting in this assembly constituency.
At polling station 65, in Girls Higher Secondary Handwara , where Sajad Lone cast his vote at S.no 503. 67-year-old Raja Begum said, "We voted for the development of the area, besides we also expect that the new government would solve the problem of unemployment in the area, either it is PDP or any other party.
Early Times have learnt that fear and uncertainty is arising here among common masses in Handwara assembly constituency as neck to neck fight was seen between PDP's Ghulam Mohi-Ud Din Sofi and PC's Sajad Lone as of now people are hoping for peace and development in the region. Surprisingly Sajad shot into headlines last month when he called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
That meeting put a doubt in the common masses in Kashmir. As people believes that Sajad had entered into some sort of a pact with the BJP. People Conference Chairman Sijad Lone spoke to the Media persons about the future plans before casting his vote, asserting that he would cross a bridge only when he comes to it.
When asked about the threat to his party by any political party in his assembly constituency Sajad said that, let the people decide to whom they want to choose. Hundreds of people, young and old were seen gathered outside the polling stations which have been set up in government buildings.
However it is pertinent to mention here that Sajad had contested the 2008 Lok Sabha election from Baramulla in north Kashmir but lost to Sharief-ud-Din Shariq of the National Conference (NC).
Early Times spoke to many voters about the changing scenario of Politics in Kashmir, "We have decided to participate in the elections to vote for change," said Javid Wani, 22 who was voting for the first time.
We came here to vote, but we will vote for our own party, and without naming any party they said that, we don't want any compromise on Article 370 about which Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) has said a lot so far, so we are not going to vote in their favour, and if anybody is going to shake the hands with them, he will be our enemy, who so ever it is, a group of youth said. Mohammad Assadullah supported the voice of the youth and said that, "it is clear how Sijad can claim that he will be the next chief minister of J&K, it is all mere wastage of time, for God sake you being a journalist tell us that is he a Member of Parliament, nor he is a Member of Legislative Assembly, so what can he do, he asked.
