Early Times Report

Chenani, Dec 2: It appears that even after 67 years of Independence life of people is still centered on desire for basic water, power and road infrastructure.
Six assembly constituencies in Udhampur and Reasi districts still lack core infrastructure and people utter 'nothing has changed'. Despite the un-kept promises, people come out of the homes to 'vote' as being the only medium which many bring bright future. However with 'never say never' attitude, people have enthusiastically voted in large numbers with polling recorded in excess of 60 %. "Its for the seventh time, I am casting my vote. Nothing has changed on the ground despite promises, I could not even muster enough to build a house. Me and my husband work as daily wagers and support four of our children. Despite efforts, we were not included in below poverty line category", said, Shanti Devi(52) resident of Narsoo after coming of polling station at Dharmthal.
"After so much dejection, I hope that future will be kind to us. And in pursuit of better future for my children, I have come out to vote", she added.Rajiv(26) of Chenani, a driver by profession is livid by the present state of affairs in his region even after decades."The condition of roads in shambles, irregular supply of power and water supply and despite reminders to past repertative and local administration nothing has materialized. There is a rampant corruption in the area", he said."The education sector is lagging far behind. In one of the government high school in the area, there is only one teacher who too rarely attends the schools. One can image what the future holds for children here. Due to lack of employment avenues, youth is forced to leave homes and move to cities for better future", he added. Shamema Akhtar(32) of Samroli after casting her franchise was skeptical that whether anything will change on the ground. "The leaders are only accessible during the time of elections otherwise they turn us off from their doors. They never fulfill the promises. Our area lacks in every sector, power is only available for 4-6 hours in a day, water comes only twice or thrice in a week. We have to travel miles to get even first aid", she said."However, I am hoping that new representative will bring the much needed development in the area", she added.
92 years old Sansaro Devi has lost count on how many times she has voted. But the future of grand children has led her to polling booth in district court complex Udhampur. "I want better future for my grand children. There is huge problem of unemployment in Udhmapur area, with very less job avenues. It is very difficult for parents to support children after spending their lives earning on raising them. Also the quality of education is very poor here, our children find very hard to compete when they step outside. Unfortunately, the past government's did not any initiatives in this regard.Along with three constituencies of Poonch district, six constituencies of Udhampur and Reasi also went to polls in second phase on Tuesday.
