Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, Dec 2: Politically strategic Sangrama assembly seat in this North Kashmir district that is going to polls on December 9 is set to witness a triangular competition between National Conference, Congress and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ten candidates are in fray here with most of the candidates contesting as independents. Although PDP won this seat in 2008 assembly elections, this election is said to provide a tough competition to the present MLA Syed Basharat Bukhari. A resident of Kreeri village Basharat Bukhari is said to lose precious vote bank this time because of an independent candidate Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Sofi, who is from the same village.Bukhari is also facing the competition from strong rival political players like NC's Khawaja Mohammad Yaqoob Wani and Shoaib Nabi Lone who is contesting on the Congress ticket. Being a senior leader Yaqoob is said to have a strong footing in Wagoora and its adjacent villages, besides this Wani is said to have the benefit of strong NC vote bank. Shoaib Nabi Lone, an ex-MLA of the constituency and son of then Minister of State for Education, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Lone is also having a strong footing in the upcoming elections. Shoaib is said to have faced defeat in the previous elections because of the boycott in his native village.Shoaib is enjoying a full support this time in Nowpora Jagir and villages in the lower belt of the constituency."If people think of PDP wave than Basharat Bukhari will have an edge. NC's Yaqoob Wani has done well for the people of his area, lot of people admire him. This will definitely help him in the upcoming elections. The situation this time in the constituency suggests that there will be a no boycott here which will definitely help Shoaib to score more votes, said Mohammad Afzal, a political analyst. Sangrama, where polls are slated for Dec 9, is one of the largest constituencies of the district Baramulla. The constituency has seen a minimum effect of boycott calls in the past and people vote in droves. In 2002 assembly elections voter turnout in the constituency was 35.91 that increased to 46.61 percent in 2008. While for the present elections the turnout is assumed to touch 60 percent this time. The candidates in this constituency are wooing the voters over the development card, education, electricity and unemployment to educated youth. The 10 candidates who are trying their luck from the constituency are Farooq Ahmad Bhat (JKNPP), Fazal Mahmood Baig (IND), Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Bhat (JKPC) Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Sofi (IND), Hilal Ahmad Bhat (IND), Irfan Hafiz Lone (IND), Mohammad Yaqoob Wani (JKNC), Nisar Ahmad Shah (All J&K Kissan Mazdoor Party), Shoaib Nabi Lone (INC) and Syed Basharat Ahmad Bukhari (JKPDP). |
