Major infiltration bid foiled on LoC | Alert troops push 15 odd militants back to PoK | | M S Nazki
Early Times Report
MENDHAR, Jan 16: A major infiltration bid by 15 odd militants was foiled by troops from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote sub-sector of Poonch late yesterday night. A group of 10 to 15 militants appeared on the Pak side of the LoC at about 10 pm on Thursday in the forward Tarkundi forest area of Balakote. While they were trying to enter Indian territory, troops, who have already been put on high alert in view of the intelligence inputs of a terror strike in J&K on the eve of US President Barrack Obama's visit to India on January 26, challenged them, according to official sources. Soon after the troops challenged them, they opened fire. To provide them cover fire, Pak army also opened fire which was returned by the border troops, the sources added. The intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides continued till 2 am. Sources said the militants managed to retreat unhurt. After the firing ended, the troops laid a cordon around the area to further minimise the chances of infiltration by militants. In the morning, the troops carried out searches in the area but nothing incriminating was found. Sources said a tight vigil was being maintained all along the LoC and the International Border (IB) to foil any intrusion bid by the Pak-based militants. |
