Jammu, Jan 16: The culmination of 26th traffic week tomorrow comes with an indication that the activity throughout remained a ceremonial only with fanfare missing throughout. Though the concerned authorities deny any such contention, but the field reports were quite apparent about the event that was more of a damp squib rather than a normal activity even. Adding woe to the miseries, cash strapped traffic police department , this time round fell short of providing manpower through the volunteers as well as getting support from schools to get children engaged in awareness campaign which have been usual sight on earlier occasions. On a day before the Lohri festival, even the Divisional Commissioner's vehicle too was seen jostling in the crowd near General Bus Stand, what more to say about the misery of a commuter.
A tent erected at Bikram Chowk in this week turned out to be the only awareness camp, but sans any announcements on the rules and regulations. Traffic cops though were seen erratically deployed at various points, which added more to confusion and disorder while jams on roads and various bottlenecks in the city were commonplace sight.
As the Lohri festival too fell in the week, it created more inconvenience for the people rather than smooth flow of traffic that was need of the day.
While debate competitions and other allied programmes remained hot subject throughout the week, traffic chaos and violations were the ground realities that went unabated.
Jumping the red signal and traffic light and triple riding on two wheeler was common phenomenon even.
Wearing the seatbelts was not seen to be practiced by the four wheeler drivers. The two-wheeler riders were also seen devoid of wearing the helmet.
The matadors and mini bus plier's were never checked to remain in the confines of the bus stops, the irony being that the routes of the mini buses are devoid of particular bus tops even. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Traffic, Mohan Lal talking to Early Times however claimed that all possible measures were put in practice to make the traffic week significant of awareness purpose.
Though he claimed that in wake of lesser resources , the department avoided putting general people as well as school children to inconvenience, the traffic department took all necessary steps to maintain a balance in guiding the vehicle pliers, drivers and commuters the significance of adhering to traffic norms.
" There has been no lacunae in making the traffic week a perfect event as we had made all arrangements to guide the public about the norms and rules to be followed in traffic week. Though it has been a passive activity based on educating the masses about the norms to be adhered, we would be going on enforcement after the week, if we come against any defaulter," aid Mohan Lal .
When asked about the treat perception looming large over the possible militant attack on the soft targets like schools and traffic police alertness to frisk vehicle pliers, Mohan Lal said," besides looking out for defaulters, our department is clinically on guard to swoop on any suspicious element coming across in the checking process". |
