| JU's glitzy auditorium upsets | | Sound system fails, leaves participants disappointed | |

JAMMU, Jan 16: University of Jammu today again disappointed youngsters who have come from 25 different universities of North India to showcase their exceptional talents and cultural peculiarity of their respective states.
On the second day of the 30th North Zone Youth Festival being held in the University, nine events took place at four different venues. Mime, Mimicry, Western Solo and Western Group Song which were held in General Zorawar Singh Auditorium failed to impress the audiences to the maximum since the sound system was in such a mess that even those who had been sitting in the front row understood nothing of what those melodious voices were singing or performing.
What to talk of clarity of voices, the sound system was in such a terrible mess that the official dealing with it had to change the mikes several times. There were voices in the auditorium questioning the wisdom of Judges who had been assigned the task of adjudicating the performance of the participants in all the four events held in the auditorium. How are they adjudicating when the mikes and the expensive speakers installed in the auditorium are not working properly, was what most of the participants were heard saying.
They were amazed at the silence of the judges. They did not mince words in saying that if the university was not well-prepared, they should not have hosted this prestigious event. An official associated with the event informed that the sound system was not working properly because the university authorities did not change the wiring despite being repeatedly requested by the officials manning the General Zorawar Singh Auditorium (GWSA). The wires have to be replaced and it is because of this, that the sound system is giving jitters to one and all, said the official.
Apart from the sound system, stage was being managed by seemingly inexperienced hosts who neither in poetry nor had command over the language they had been speaking. Despite making best efforts, they failed to enthuse the audience. Those in the control room of auditorium compounded the mess. A group from Guru Jumbeshwar University of Science and Technology (GJUST) Hissar was left high and dry by those manning the control room. They twice failed to play the music for the mime to be performed by this group.
Twice, they came to the stage to perform but the ones manning the control room failed to play the CD leaving them red-faced before a well-attended audience. To ensure that the show continues, a singer who had been called to perform from among the audience was forced to stop his and return to his seat in the hall. His melodious voice had just begun mesmerising the audience and there, out came a university official asking him to discontinue.
Another troupe was called to perform. They too face the same problem. Their CD too got stuck and it was after a couple of minutes that they managed to start their performance. Not only the sound system was horrible, the lights which have a strong role in the mime show remained static and focused on the performers, thus bringing down the level of the interest which one usually takes. But this did not take out anything from the performers who had worked hard.
Interestingly, the adjudicators raised no objection over the defective light and sound system. During the mime event, when Punjabi University Patiala was called to perform, they remained stuck on stage with no music being played by the control room. The two hosts of the mime show had to request the control room for the music to be played in the background. The goof-ups continued throughout the day but the judges maintained complete silence. They preferred not to take up the issue with University authorities.
In the western solo event, participants were seen complaining about the mikes not transmitting their voices properly in the hall. Nothing was audible to the audience yet they were appreciating the fact that the young stars who had gathered from all over North India did not leave the stage in anger or fit of rage. They continued with their performance. Day culminated with western group song. |
