JAMMU, Jan 16: Attribute it to the indifference of the State government, the migrants from Doda, Ramban, Gool, Banihal and Mahore areas who were forced to desert their home and hearth due to growing militancy in these areas are living in sub human conditions for years. These families have rued while government failed to provide them shelter where they could live with their families, the relief amount given to them was too meager to sustain. "With prices of essential commodities growing several fold since 1995, the relief is becoming pathetically inadequate to sustain ourselves" said a migrant.
While the state government puts the number of families affected by the militant attacks at 1024, the actual number of families is about 2500 according to a leader of these migrant families. In hostile weather, these families have to live under open sky in subhuman hutments. Some of them have however managed rented accommodations in the periphery of the city. Though the Apex Court fixed an amount of Rs 21 crores as to these families but the relief is still awaited. Sources further said that a writ petition was also filed in this regard by Prof. Bhim Singh. Prof. Bhim Singh, JKNPP Chief patron and Advocate Supreme Court, when contacted said that the Supreme court had Sanctioned 21 crores as a relief on 13th July 2007 for these migrants who migrated in 1995 , but the migrants were not given any sort of relief. He added, " I have filed a petition in SC in 2008, for the contempt of court as these migrants were deprived of the relief even after sanction by the SC". He further added that the SC then referred the Case to Chief Justice of High court and the Union Government and State government were directed to provide relief.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Shantmanu when contacted said that some of the families were given the amount as relief while some remained pending owing to non availability or complete documents. He further said that only the families with complete documents were given the relief.
