Alert on border in J&K during Obama's visit to India | | | Whenever some dignitary visits India or some top Indian leaders visits Jammu and Kashmir militants strike in a bid to focus world attention on the ticklish Kashmir issue. The latest being in middle of December when ahead of Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir militants killed 11 security personnel ,including eight soldiers, when they attacked an Army picket in Uri.And the Army authorities have received inputs from intelligence agencies which have revealed that Pakistan based militants may strike at soft targets, including schools, religious places in Jammu and Kashmir during the upcoming visit of US President, Barack Obama who has accepted Modi's invitation for being the chief guest at the Republic Day ceremony in New Delhi on January 25. Despite the fact that Obama is travelling to India under a thick US security cover and special snnifer dog squad is being brought to New Delhi to keep a watch on mischief mongers,a high alert has been sounded in entire India in order to prevent terrorists from indulging in any type of subversive activity. Security grid is being further upgraded in Jammu and Kashmir so that militants failed to carry out some acts of violence which may distract the attention of New Delhi and the US President who are set to finalise several agreements. Army authorities have revealed that there were inputs about possibility of attacks by Pakistan-based terror outfits on "soft targets" such as schools, religious places, military convoys and civilian areas in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of US President Barack Obama's India visit later this month. As per the intelligence agency input 200 heavily-armed militants were waiting in 36 launching pads across the Line of Control (LoC) on the other side of Pir Panjal range and there is every possibility that Pakistan might try to divert the fringe elements of the home grown terrorist outfits on this side of the border. These inputs indicate that terrorists may try to attack soft targets, including schools, religions places, army convoys and other civilian areas in Jammu and Kashmir. It is in this connection that the Army authorities have directed all the field commanders to initiate measures for preventing any fresh ingress of militants from across the border and ensure that militants were not able to carry out any incident of subversive activity. The Army authorities claim that hitherto Indian troops have succeeded in foiling all major ingress bids. And these authorities believe that the main reason behind repeated ceasefire violations by the Pakistani troops was to carve out a passage for militants so that they could sneak into Jammu and Kashmir for giving a fillip to the level of violence which, during the last five years, has markedly declined. Agencies in Pakistan, both state and non-state actors, are keen to make it a big in Jammu and Kashmir by launching a major attack on safe targets so that US President, Barack Obama, who will be in New Delhi,is forced to take cognizance of the problem. Hitherto, Islamabad has failed to secure US intervention or mediation for settling the Kashmir issue.Washington has supported New Delhi's claim that Kashmir was a bilateral problem which did not need a third-party mediation or intervention. Washington has remained unmoved by Islamabad's repeated pleas that the US Government should persuade India to resume the process of dialogue with Islamabad. It is so because Washington is aware of the machinations of Pakistan as far as its needling India is concerned. Hence Pakistan wants to assist militants in carrying out a major subversive plan which could attract the attention of Obama.Possibly Islamabad forgets about the possible US reaction in case any Pakistan backed terrorist resorted to some major mischief or Washington could feel enraged if the Pakistani troops resorted to repeated ceasefire violations during the time Obama was in New Delhi. This may force Washington to review its aid programme for Pakistan and Obama may even impose sanctions on Pakistan if agencies across the border launched a major attack on shrines, schools or Army convoys or pickets in Jammu and Kashmir or in any Indian state. |
