SRINAGAR, Jan 16: Protests broke out in the Maisuma and the adjoining areas after Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik was arrested by police while he tried to carry out a protest rally against the settlement of West Pakistan refugees in Jammu.
Immediately after the Friday prayers, Malik along with scores of his supporters came out on the main road near Budshah Chowk and tried best to carry out the protest rally against the settlement of West Pakistan refugees. The participants of the rally shouted slogans and alleged the move would change the demography of the entire state.
The police personnel and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans who were already posted there in good numbers asked Malik and his supporters to retreat. However, the JKLF Chairman along with the others did not listen to the suggestion and moved ahead with their protest rally.
Following this the police and CRPF personnel swooped on the rally participants and stopped them from moving ahead. The JKLF Chairman was whisked away in a police vehicle and was lodged in a nearby police station. Some of the JKLF supporters and other rally participants were also taken into preventive custody on this occasion. As soon as the news of arrest reached the Maisuma and adjoining areas JKLF supporters and workers came out and started pelting stones on the police and CRPF personnel.
