It is said that 'A good vine needs no bush ' if its ten
drils are properly cared and guided it can flourish, both yield fruit and decorate the surroundings. We cannot consider any village, town or city beautiful and worth living unless it is provided with all the basic amenities and conforms to the parameters which make any city or a town an ideal one. There is no dearth of towns and cities in the world which, in spite of, being situated in the marshy, arid and the desert region are so developed that a large number of the tourists from all over the world throng these cities and appreciate the specimen of the architect, lay out and the amenities being provided to their people by their governments. The metros in our country are not more than jungles of concrete and sky scrapers with mushrooming of stinking slums, leakingsewerages, water logging, traffic jams, unhygienicatmosphere. There are reports that, due to overcrowding and over population Bombay is sinking and Kolkatta is stinking that is why neither of them is worth calling an ideal or a smart metro. Sh. NarenderModi, the visionary Prime Minister of India has resolved to develop some of its cities, towns and villages into Adarsh and smart cities through the joint efforts of our parliamentarians and the central government.
The people of Jammu and Kashmir are thrilled and feel enthusiastic as to which are those cities, towns and villages of the state which deserve to be brought in the ambit of the resolve of the Prime Minister for developing asAdarsh villages and smart cities. In fact there are many towns and villages which are worth developing as Adarsh village or smart city, but Basohli, which was once a capital of popular, prosperous and powerful duggar state of Jammu and Kashmir possesses all those qualities which are considered as prerequisite for developing into Adarsh Nagar or smart city.
The present town of Basohli ( Latitude 32-30, Longitude 75-51 degrees ) the cradle of BasohliPainting, is situated on the right bank of river Ravi, in a fertile valley with a mean elevation of 2170 ft, which stretches for about six miles to the south west. As in the case of some other Rajput KIngdoms, Basohli Rajas claim descent from the Pandvas. The founder of the state was one Bhog Pal ( 765 A.D. ). A son of the then Raja of Kulu. Raja Bhoopat Pal founded the present town Basohli in 1635. Magnificent palaces of Basohli were constructed in the regime of RajsBhoopat pal which were not only considered as one of the seven wonders of hills of Jammu, but were termed as the very finest building of the kind in the east by one Vigne, the French travellor who visited Basohli between 1835- 39. Later on Raja Sangram Pal,HindalPal,Kirpal Pal, Dhiraj Pal, Medni Pal and Amrit Pal made addition to it from time to time. The other cause of popularity of Basohli is the Miniature painting which are showcased in almost all the museums of the world. The pashmina shawls are the craze of the elite class of the Indian society. In the 17 th and 18 thcenturies ,Basohli owed much of its prosperity to the fact that it was on the famous trade rout which passed through Nahan, Bilaspur, Guler and Nurpur to Jammu. The Pal Rajas of Basohli ruled Basohli state for about 1500 years. 45 generations of Pal dynasty from Raja Bhog Pal to Raja Kalyan Pal ruled the state which was finally merged with Jammu and Kashmir under an agreement reached between East India company and the rulers of Lahore in 1846.
Basohli is situated at the confluence of three states, cultures and languages i.e. Pujab, Himachal Pardesh and Jammu and Kashmir. It is surrounded by the crystal clear backwaters of RSD lake which presents picturesque view of the whole town. Owing to its clean and hygienic environment and gifted with the rich tourist potential by the bountiful natureBasohli can offer multidimensional tourism in the shape of old monuments, lakes, forests, shrines, temples and monuments. There is wide scope for water tourism, water sports, natural, religious and historical tourism.
Basohli has always been consideredas a town worth living because, even in the present times the town is peaceful and free from any sort of crime. There are no cases of quarrel, group fighting, kidnaping for extortion, stabing, murder, theft or cheating reported in police station or the courts except the normal cases pertaining to the land and property. Owing to the hygienic environment the natives enjoy good health status. All sections of society live like brethren and have an unshakable faith in secularism and collective living. Basohli town has its own Gurudwara with acres of land attached to it when there is no Sikh family living in the whole tehsil.
In the coming days the cable stayed bridge over river Ravi is going to be completed by the end of Sept.2015 which will not only open new vistas of tourism and trade but will also usher in an era of prosperity in the state. Basohli, once considered as the last corner of the state of Jammu and Kashmir will emerge as gateway of Jammu and Kashmir presenting varieties of tourism at the threshold.Basohli, an historical town known for its rich heritage, unique palces and forts, world famous chitter kala, pashmina shawls and world famous Ram Leela possess all the qualities which help advocate for its adaption for Prime Minister Adarsh Nagar or smart city Yojna. Making Basohli a smart city or adarsh Nagar can only revive its lost glory and faded heritage otherwise nothing can be expected from the government in the state where the developmental work in the state is selective and is the prerogative of the influential and powerful politicians.
