Hakim, Rashid give 'cold response' to Azad | RS polls | | Cong leader can't win without their support Bashir Assad Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 4: Independent candidates from Kashmir giving "cold response" to former union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad joint candidate of National Conference and Congress for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls has put the veteran Congress leader in a tight spot as he cannot win the RS polls, slated to be held on Saturday, without their support. As the election to the four Rajya Sabha seats is just 3-days away confusing signals are coming from MLA Langate Er Rashid and MLA Khansahib Hakim Mohammad Yasin which are likely to upset the prospects of Congress heavy weight Ghulam Nabi Azad. Even though Azad met Hakim, Tarigami and Rashid the other day, however, only one out of three, M Y Tarigami confirmed that he would vote in favour of Azad while as Hakim and Rashid are giving confusing statements indicating that they can go either way or even abstain from voting. Rashid today made an interesting point by saying that voting in the Rajya Sabha for PDP-BJP alliance does mean the approval to the coalition. Rashid said that voting in Rajya Sabha has nothing to do with the government formation however, he was quick to add that any unconditional support for the Rajya Sabha may create many apprehensions. Rashid said that before taking a final call about exercising his franchise or otherwise in the Rajya Sabha elections, he wants to satisfy himself in the court of conscience taking care of sentiments and aspirations of people, who have voted for him. "I am yet indecisive as on one hand I wish communal forces not to win but at the same time I have to vote for the Congress, whose track record is not so encouraging when it comes to Kashmir. Even if I decide to abstain from the voting it would ensure BJP's victory," Rashid said. Rashid also reiterated that he is not part of any third front but his meetings and understanding with M Y Tarigami and Hakeem Mohammad Yasin are always issue specific. "It doesn't necessarily mean that we have unanimity over every issue," Rashid said. Meanwhile Hakim Mohammad Yasin even after having met Azad today said that he has not decided as yet which way to go. Talking to Early Times Hakim said that he would announce his decision only on 7th morning. Asked whether he and Tarigami would take a decision jointly, Hakim said that Tarigami has opened his cards while he is still indecisive. However, sources said that Hakim has also opened communications channels with PDP-BJP leaders and is trying to bargain as much as he can. Sources said that he has not closed any option including abstaining from the voting. Meanwhile two independents from Udhampur and Zanskar have openly declared their support to PDP-BJP alliance candidates making the battle for Azad very tough. Even if Rashid and Hakim decide to abstain from voting it would be an indirect support to the PDP-BJP alliance and in that case Azad is sure to lose. |
