JAMMU, Feb 4: Tall claims made by the previous government headed by Omar Abdullah about health services in the state were only confined to his speeches and official files as on an average, two Autistic children (Children with neurobehavioral disorder Autism) are being brought to hospitals every week.
Pertinently, recent data released by USA's Center for Disease Control and Prevention quoted the prevalence of autism at an alarming one in 68 children in March 2014. In year 2012, the figures stood at one in 88.
Sources informed Early Times that last year the Post Graduate Department of Psychiatry GMC Srinagar in collaboration with Royal College of Psychiatry London organized a workshop on Autism, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, wherein it was disclosed that nearly 400 children in the State are suffering from Autism, a rare neuro-developmental disorder diagnosed in one over 1,000 children .
"They said that the number of these children might be huge because a lot of cases are not being reported owing to not as much of awareness as well as required infrastructure or facilities in the State," they claimed and adding that in the State there was no government centre who could prepare autistic children.
They further said that the Department of Psychiatry of Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and Srinagar are dealing with such cases but they lacked special trained staff as well as required facilities to deal with them.
Pleading anonymity, a doctor stated that people are also ignorant about Autism which actually needs intervention and training so that Autistic kids can be rehabilitated. "Interestingly, the state health department has done nothing to establish such facilities so that autistic children could get proper treatment.
Taking on the issue with Early Times, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry department Dr Mannu Arora admitted that about one to two patient of Autism report per week.
"The concept of child psychiatry is new in the State that is why we are yet to create requisite facilities. We had also organised camps to make people aware of the disorder "he stated.
