HC seeks details about shelter sheds, rent paid to flood victims

Srinagar, Feb 4: The Jammu and Kashmir High court has directed all Deputy Commissioners of the Valley to file compliance reports indicating how many shelter sheds have been handed over to the flood affected families and how many affected families have been paid rent.
"Except Deputy Commissioners Ganderbal, Shopian, Poonch and Ramban, no other Deputy Commissioner has filed compliance report as directed by the Court in its Order dated 19th December, 2014," a Division Bench comprising Justice M H Attar and J R Kotwal said hearing a Public Interest Ligation.
"At this stage, it is not known to the court as to whether the possession of the shelter sheds has been handed over by these Deputy Commissioners to the affected families. It is also not known as to where the affected families, who have not opted for shelter sheds, have been paid the rent," the division said hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed in the aftermath of last year's devastating floods.
The Deputy Commissioners, the court said, shall file compliance reports, indicating therein as to possession of how many shelter sheds has been handed over to the affected families and how many affected families have been paid rent.
On December 19 last year, Ghulam Hassan Malik, Technical Officer to Chief Engineer PW(R&B) Department Kashmir had filed status report, stating that 285 shelter sheds have been handed over to the respective DCs.
In another direction, the court directed Additional Advocate M A Chashoo to provide information to the Court whether any person have died during the flood rescue operation.
"Details be provided about such persons and compensation, if any, paid to the claimants/kith and kin of such persons," the court said.
The direction followed after advocate G A Lone, petitioner-in-person submitted that to his Information some people lost their precious lives in the recent devastating floods while rescuing the flood affected persons.
The court also granted week's time to S A Makroo, ASGI, for filing compliance repot regarding relief provided by the central government to the flood affected people.
