SRINAGAR, Feb 10: Normal life was affected across Kashmir valley due to a strike call given by the separatist leaders against the killing of a civilian during a firing incident in the Palhallan area of Pattan town in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. At the same time authorities enforced restrictions in some of the volatile areas of the summer capital in order to thwart any protests that might be carried out against the civilian killing. Restrictions were imposed in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of the SafaKadal, Khanyar, Rainawari, MaharajGunj, Nowhatta and Maisuma areas of the Srinagar city. Reports reaching here said that movement of people was also restricted in the Palhallan, Pattan and Sopore areas of North Kashmir. Extra deployment of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was made in the sensitive areas of the Kashmir valley so that nobody takes the law and order situation in their hands. Clashes broke out between agitating youth and police and CRPF personnel in the Palhallan area soon after the funeral of slain youth. The protesters resorted to heavy stone-throwing on police and paramilitary forces deployed in the area. The police resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the protesters. The intermittent clashes continued in the area throughout the day. Sources said that a Sub-Inspector (SI) of police identified as Khursheed Ahmad was injured after a stone hit him during clashes. A youth namely Muhammad Aamir of Tantraypora was also injured in the clashes. The situation was tense in the area by the time this report was filed. Agitated youth staged a protest in Arampora locality of Sopore town and clashed with the police and security forces. Minor clashes also erupted at Sheeri in Baramulla. Reports said that protests broke out in the Khudwani village of South Kashmir's Kulgam district against the killing of Palhallan civilian identified as Farooq Ahmad Bhat. Scores of protesters mostly comprising of youth threw stones on police and CRPF personnel posted in the area. The throwing of the stones was replied by the lobbing of smoke shells and lathi charge by police and CRPF personnel. Some youth also pelted stones on a police post in Qaimoh area of the district. Stone throwing incidents were also reported from the Kakapora area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district. Police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the protesters and later additional numbers of security forces personnel were deployed in the area to maintain calm. Clashes also erupted in JanglatMandi area of Anantnag district. In Bandipora district of North Kashmir, youth clashed with security forces at Papachan, Naidkhai and Hajin. Late in the evening protests also broke out in the HabbaKadal and adjoining areas of the summer capital. As soon as the police and CRPF personnel were withdrawing from the areas groups of youth appeared on the scene and threw stones as well as bricks on them. The protests were going on; however, no injuries have been reported so far. In the meanwhile life came to a grinding halt in most areas of the summer capital and other major districts as well as towns of Kashmir valley. Most of the government offices, banks, shops and other commercial establishments remained closed in Srinagar and other areas of the Kashmir valley.
