4 Cardiac Surgeons being paid for doing nothing, poor patients left to die | Another sordid saga of GMC administration | | Abodh Sharma
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 10: Attribute it to the scant regard that the Government, department of Health and Medical Education and the Government Medical College administration have for human life, no cardiac surgery has been performed in the premier hospital for months, leaving many a poor patients from across the region to wait for their death while four Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgeons in the department are being paid huge salaries from public exchequer for sitting idle. Astoundingly, hundreds of patients who were admitted for various cardiac ailments that required By-Pass or Open Heart surgeries have been referred to hospitals outside the state, notwithstanding the fact that many of them cannot afford treatment in hospitals like PGIMER or AIIMS or other private hospitals and have no option but to wait for their death. Sources disclose that there are four CTVS surgeons in the GMC, namely Dr. Noor Ali, the Head of the Department, Dr. Ishtiaq Mir, Dr. Arvind Kohli and Dr. Vivek Gandotra have been undertaking no surgeries since long and patients have been discharged without any treatment. A patient from Surankote, who was admitted in GMC for multiple cardiac ailments, was required to undergo a by- pass surgery, but he was told that such surgeries were not undertaken at the GMC Jammu. Since the family could not afford to take him outside the state, the retired teacher was taken back to his native village, where he is merely waiting for his death. However, some respite to the cardiac patients is provided by the department of Cardiology, where doctors undertake over 250 procedures every year. "Patients which can be cured by using Stent or Pace makers are being taken care of in department of Cardiology, but other patients have to go to hospitals outside the state" said a senior technician in the hospital. Dr. Noor Ali, HoD department of CTVS admitted that no surgeries were being performed in GMCH, because of unavailability of Heart- Lung machine. "We do not have the heart-Lung machine. One that we had, was procured in 1984 and has become obsolete" informed Dr. Ali. "We have informed the hospital administration several times, but nothing has been done so far and we have no option but to refer patients to PGI or AIIMS" he added. Sources in the hospital administration however divulged that the tenders were once invited for procurement of the Heart-Lung machine, but since only two companies furnished their tenders, the process could not be concluded. Sources however also disclose that there is more than what meets the eye and owing to bitter mutual differences within the members of faculty, the department that could give lives to many has itself died an unnatural death. |
