No one threatened us: Hakim Yasin, Er Rashid | Is Azad lying? | | Fazal Khan
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 10: The Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, who won the recent RS polls in JK with a slender margin of two votes last week, just one day before the polling day had alleged that a few IPS officers at the behest of BJP had threatened the independent candidates not to vote for him but he had not named the candidates who were threatened. Azad had issued a detailed statement and had blamed the centre for misusing the official machinery to ensure his defeat. He had even said that he would file a complaint with the President Pranab Mukherjee. The two independents who had kept their cards closed to their chest till they cast their vote on last Saturday were MLA Khansahib Hakim Mohammad Yasin and MLA Langate Er Rashid. When contacted Hakim Yasin while talking to Early Times said, "No IPS officer threatened me." On being reminded that Azad had issued a detailed statement on independents being intimidated by the IPS officers at BJP's behest, Yasin feigned ignorance about the matter and maintained that "no one had pressurized him." Another independent MLA Er Rashid also denied that any IPS officer approached him or intimidated him. "No one threatened me," Er Rashid told Early Times. A political analyst while talking to this newspaper claimed that Azad issued a hard hitting statement just one day before the RS polls as part of his election strategy. "Azad is a veteran politician and is aware about all the tricks of the trade. He issued the statement just to ensure his victory," he added. The analyst alleged that Congress has a history of manipulating the situation in its favour and it seems the party leaders fear that they may have to taste their own medicine in BJP rule. " During last RS polls in Jammu and Kashmir which were held in 2009, the Congress and National Conference together had managed to engineer a split in the JK unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following which seven out of eleven BJP MLAs indulged in cross voting which led to NC-Cong combine sweeping the RS polls. Azad had participated in those elections and had won then," the analyst added. He questioned why didn't Azad issue a statement at that point of time? And why didn't he approach the President then? When truth came to fore BJP suspended its seven legislators from the party which made NC and Congress believe that BJP has been wiped out from the Jammu region. A Kashmir based BJP leader while talking to Early Times said, "Had BJP used the official machinery Azad would have not won. We are not like Congress party. There were clear cut instructions from the Prime Minister's Office to the officials not to interfere in the poll process." The BJP leader said that Azad should name the independent candidates who were threatened by the IPS officers or it would be assumed that he was "lying." A top officer wishing not to be named said, "You can confirm it from anywhere that officials had no role to play in the recent RS-polls. It's unfortunate that a leader like Azad sahib has maligned the image of IPS officers." |
