Officials in Srinagar keen on resumption of cross-LoC trade, travel | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 10: Following Chinese pledge to provide additional financial aid besides technical assistance to Pakistan for developing nuclear power reactors Islamabad has started toughening its stand on the row over seizure of drugs which were being smuggled into Jammu and Kashmir. The officials of the two sides held a couple of meetings but failed to end the st alemate over allege d drug smuggling through Uri-Muzaffarabad trade route. The Pakistani officials did not accept a demand from the Kashmir side. The officials from Kashmir side had 00 put forth the demand of forming the joint investigation team to probe the matter."We also asked for an FIR copy and call data of the arrested driver but that too was not agreed upon," one official said.Iqbal said Kashmiri officials didn't agree to any point and were adamant to release the stranded vehicles across the LoC. Last Friday police claimed to have seized a truck carrying around 10 kilograms of narcotic substances from Muzafarrabad. The PaK authorities were demanding the release of the arrested driver along with the truck to resume the trade. The PaK authorities have detained 50 trucks and drivers of these vehicles at Chakoti across the LoC. While 21 other drivers from PaK are also stranded at Salamabad Trade Facilitation Centre since the stand-off began. Reports from across the border said that the mood in Pakistan is upbeat following Chinese promise to help Pakistan in building six nuclear power reactors. In addition to this China has assured Pakistan that Beijing would export more reactors to help Pakistan in not only resolving severe energy crisis in exporting power to other countries. According to these reports, with further improvement in the relations between Beijing and Islamabad Pakistan has renewed its planon needling India by supporting the so called Jehad in Kahsmir and by resorting to ceasefire violations on the LOC and on the IB.Reports said that officials in Srinagar and Uri have been told to adopt a patient attitude while discussing drug smuggling issue with Pak officials so that the cross-LOC trade and travel were not affrected. |
