Sinister design to let Surinsar -Mansar lakes to die of official neglect
Bhushan Parimoo2/10/2015 11:35:03 PM
No need for any Crystal to predict the fate of Lotus eyes in near future Two betwiching
eyes Surinsar and Mansar lakes in the Shivaliks of Jammu add grace to the Warriors body
of Jammu an unmatched boon which nature has been kind to gift us But for the apathetic approach of the government coupled with noconcern attitude of the Jammuites should leave no one in doubt whatsoever that these majestic lakes are destined to die of official neglect
Twinkling lotus eyes lakes showcase waters most alluring qualities from mesmerizing ripples and mirrorlike reflections to crystalline clarity These comes in ascending order famous Dal lake just 6 meters Mansabal 10 meters Asias largest fresh water lake Wular 85 14 meters in Kashmir Nanital 18 meters of Uttara Khand Surinsar comes next 32 meters Mansar 42 meters officially 37 meters a gift of nature this gift which needs utmost care
The Surinsar Lake is situated about 23 km to the north east of Jammu city at an elevation of 605 meters above mean sea level Water body covering an area of 029 Sq Kms nestled with a beautiful island of 96 meters by 18 mt at its centre It is a fine picturesque sweet water lake with a circumference of 2496 km The maximum length breadth and depth of the lake are 862 m 510m and 32m respectively The water spread of the lake varies from 2792 to 29 Hectares The water level of the lake oscillates by about 120 metres and touches its peak during August The excess water flows towards the western side of the lake and goes into a channel lying by its side
The Mansar lake is located at 666 metres above mean sea level 44 km east of Jammu covers an area about 0522 sq Km circumference of 3020 meters Long Axis Maximum Length1038 meters S32E Maximum Width 644 Depth 42 meter The total volume of lake water is 1237 Mm3 The maximum depth of water in the lake is 3825 m
Sinister intentions were laid bare when none other than the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questions the need to contain the Lotus eyes from dying and take required measures to prevent and restore them He was supposed to ensure as a head of the government over all development without bias Charging the Chief Minister of bias and discrimination during the course of meeting of Surinsar Mansar Development Authority SMDA Harsh Dev Singh the then MLA Ramnagar who was participating as member of SMDA asked for to allot sufficient funds to restore Lotus eyes citing whereas the government had announced a package of Rs 1100 crores no funds on need based has been earmarked Omar Abdullah who was chairing the meeting as Chief Minister cum Chairman Surinsar Mansar Development Authority SMDA meeting on 16th of December 2012 at Jammu shot back losing his cool posed a question on demand What is the necessity of funding Mansar Surinsar lakes He further charged as usual as appeared in the newspapers that the chief minister countered him by saying he was trying to create regional divide by creating the issue of Jammu versus Kashmir Omar said that Kashmir lakes including the Dal and Wullar have been allotted funds on need basis This writer on 18th of December 2012 on behalf of Environment Awareness Forum did drew his attention for dire necessity of funding for Mansar and Surinsar lakes to save it from dying If the remarks attributed to you are correct then it can be safely construed that either you are not apprised with the factual position about the present scenario prevailing with regard to Mansar Surinsar lakes or you have not justified by going through the report in case it was well documented which in a normal course officers are supposed to do And if left unattended shall sooner be meeting the same fate as Dal Lake is going through at present What matters is close observation monitoring and concern which is conspicuously absent here You may not be knowing or many of those who are at the helm of affairs that Mansar Lake is deepest fresh waters lake in the entire sub continent And on expected lines nothing heard from him nor did he pass any directions on the basis of merit What is intriguing no voice was raised thereafter for discriminating attitude of the biased government though we had three MLAs as board member from Samba Kundal Nagrota Jugal Kishore and Ramnager Harshdev Singh even the conscious of civil society did not stirred any time later
Under this scenario situation is going worse every day In place Wildlife Department under whose jurisdiction these lakes falls are not discharging its bonafide responsibility instead has adopted a posture of a mute spectator to allow destruction vandalizing of flora and fauna beside encroachment of the area at large scale Various agencies are engaged who are working at cross purposes precipitating the deterioration of the lakes at a very faster pace There is Tourism Department Tourism Development Corporation SMDA and Wildlife department Water of Mansar Lake has reduced 12 feet since 1970 the water is drained since decades by gravity for providing drinking water to a large number of villages on the downside of the lake Lately four reservoirs has been constructed to store Water was got tested reluctantly by Pollution Control Board which was found unpalatable all drains around are poured in the lake it was in 1987 fish in the lake died so were jelly fish of marine origin though Shivalik has no history of marine origin Two research papers has been done on the jelly fishes one by Dr MK Joshi and other Dr Harjeet Singh Another death nail is for Turtles again of marine origin whose number has considerably dwindled due to obstructing their breeding habitats thereby laying of eyes got disturbed reduced whatever are laid are prone to foxes and dogs Need of the hour is to remove sewerage into these lakes and encroachments Besides developing on scientific lines a fenced habitat for wildlife as there is about 95 sq kms area under Wildlife which is in the process of encroachment A few years back when Atul Dullo was Commissioner Tourism had offered a substantial sum for afforestation to wildlife department which did not materialized later for reasons better known to the department
These lakes are neither barrier lake of glacier origin nor stream sustained Geologist Vaid VK is of the opinion that fractured anticline structure with faults cross faults wells up water from beneath of the lakes in shape of copious springs The writer is of the opinion that the subterrain aquifers from the erstwhile IndoBrahm river of Shivalik period be a contributing factor in its recharging catchment area is about 100 sq kms though annual average rainfall in the catchment area of the lake is 1500 mm Days are numbered Shall not last long be sure Countdown has started since the deepest pure fresh water lakes in the subcontinent have been vendalized.
