SRINAGAR, Feb 24: Politicians belonging to the mainstream camp may be at daggers with politicians owing their allegiance to the separatist ideology, but there are times when the politicians of both camps share a same stage.
A similar situation was witnessed couple of days back in the Central Kashmir's Budgam district.
Sources told Early Times that a mainstream politician belonging to Budgam district visited the residence of a Tehreek-I-Hurriyat (TEH) middle rung leader who was killed couple of weeks back by some unidentified gunman while he was on way back to home.
"The mainstream leader considered to be political heavyweight in the state especially in his home district visited the residence of Mohammad Yusuf Rather alias Yusuf Nadeem at Sandipora in Budgam district and condoled the death of Hurriyat leader. The mainstream politician conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and spent some time with the mourners," said sources.
Rather, who was associated with All Parties Hurriyat Conference-Geelani (APHC-G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani for the last 14 years, was killed by two gunmen on February 12, when he was travelling from Beerwah in Budgam to his house in the same district. Two pistol-wielding men who were sitting in the back seat of a vehicle fired at his head and later fled from the place.
"Before this the mainstream leader visited the residence of deceased Shia leader Aga Syed Fazalullah in the same district. Aga Fazalullah passed away at his residence after prolonged illness on January 29. The mainstream politician talked to some of the members of Aga family and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family," said sources.
The mainstream politician has been representing an important constituency in the Budgam district for the past three terms. He was a minister in the Peoples Democratic Party-Congress coalition government between 2002 and 2008. He has an influence in his particular area and is most of the times at war with an MLC of PDP.
"Interestingly neither the separatist conglomerate nor the mainstream party headed by the politician issued any statement with regard to his visit to the residence of the Hurriyat leader. Rather was working in the Power Development Department (PDD) and was discharging his duties as a Section Officer in the department," said sources.
Sources said the visit of the mainstream politician to the residence of Hurriyat leader is not an ordinary thing and it is viewed with curiosity by the people more so those who are associated with either of the camps. This is not for the first time that such a thing has happened as similar things have taken place in the past as well.
