Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 24: Residents of Marwah Tehsil in Kishtwar district have intensified protest and are up in arms against the government's proposed decision to construct Bursar-Pakkal dam in the Marwah area. The residents held a strong protest at Nawapachi to register it's resentment over the government decision.
Reports said that scores of residents from different areas of Marwah assembled at Tehsil headquarter Marwah to protest against the construction of the dam and termed it as against the interests of the inhabitants.
Social activist Abdul Wahid told Early Times that around 1500 families living in the area were to be relocated and that more than 5,000 kanals of cultivable land would go under the said proposed dam which will virtually make the people land less as well as the people will be forced to migrate from the area as there was no alternative land available for the people where they can live. He said that scores of villages including Hatri, Hanzal, Harji, Gujjer Basti, Bumbri, Doripath, Butpora, Lone Pora, Manzgam and Astangam would get submerged in dam waters.
People said that there was a clear-cut conspiracy to deprive the people of Marwah of their land and property. "These dams are not in the interest of this inhabited region. Let such structures be constructed elsewhere," the villagers said. The protesters said it was the first phase of their peaceful protests which is going on alternative days.
The protesters have appealed the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and the National Hydel Project Corporation to look into the matter.
A political activist Ghulam Rasool Magrey said that whole Marwah is united at all fronts including all the local politicians who are affiliated with both ruling and opposition parties and are demanding withdrawal of proposal with regard to construction of Bursar project Dam.
He said that government should focus on providing better health care facilities, better education, roads and electricity to the inhabitants of Marwah, Warwan and Dachhan rather then conspire to displaced the poor people from their own land.
The protestors also raised slogans against the local administration and allege harassment from local administration at behest of the corporate houses who are eying profit at the cost of locals aspirations.
Meanwhile a senior official in the administration said the matter was being looked into. He said that the redesign of the dam has already been done added that earlier the Dam was supposed to be constructed at village Hanzal while as per the redesigning of the dam, it will now be constructed near Dangdouru.
He said that majority of the populated area is not coming under water as the water level will not exceed beyond Qadrena bridge. He said that the other demands pertains to welfare and rehabilitation of Project effected families has already been sent to concern authorities for consideration and it's approval.
