Police to take action against 'massive' funerals of militants in the state
2/27/2018 10:50:03 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 27: The massive gatherings that are being witnessed in funerals of killed local militants post-2016 unrest is a serious concern which has to be addressed…. These gatherings romanticise and glamourise the terrorists and give boost to militancy," The Indian Express quoted a report sent by IGP, CID, to DGP SP Vaid as saying.
The report also said that one or two local boys in the Valley join militancy after participating in the funerals of militants.
Even though funerals of militants has drawn large crowds in the state, around 1,500 people had gathered in Tral earlier in February in the funeral procession of Lance Naik Mohammed Iqbal Sheikh and his father.
The two were killed in an attack on the Sunjuwan military camp in Jammu by Jaish-e-Mohammad. Tral is known to be a stronghold of the JeM, which carried out the fidayeen attack on the army camp, killing seven people - six army men and the civilian, Mohi-ud-din Sheikh, who was living with his son.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, an official had said that such a large gathering for the funeral of an army man showed the local people's opposition, however nascent, to acts of terrorism.
The official had also said that people may have attended the funeral of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani in large numbers in 2016 because they feared the local terrorists, but the gathering for a jawan's funeral procession showed they were ready to defy the diktats of terror organisations.
