Wakf Board too plagued by illegal appointments' | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 27: The Jammu and Kashmir Wakaf Board is again in news for wrong reasons- this time for illegal appointments. Sources said that there are allegations about rampant backdoor appointments in the Wakaf Board. "There are allegations that politician's relatives and workers have been appointed without following any criteria," sources said. An official of the Vigilance Organisation said that they too received several complaints for the last few years about appointments without following any procedures. "Most of the complaints are that politicians have appointed own people as administrators in various shrines. In one of the shrine, a 60 year worker of the party has been appointed as administrator. Investigation is also going in some cases," sources said. The JK Wakaf Board has also failed to retrieve the property that has been illegally occupied by the occupants across the state. The J&K Wakaf Board owns around 170 buildings, 1350 shops, 1400 rooms, over 30 showrooms, 86 sets, 50 halls, besides dozens of other assets. However, a lot of property as per official sources has been illegally occupied over the years. "Authorities have not been able to retrieve property from the people who have been illegally holding the Wakaf property despite notices were sent them several times," sources said. The Wakaf Board has nothing to show for itself: no professional college or a charitable hospital. The successive governments of the state have milked it to their own advantage and the people running the affairs of the board have been willing partners to this loot and plunder. It was established by National Conference founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah so that the body could lift up the economic condition of the Muslim masses of the state that were in deep financial straits. The Wakf Board, was supposed to make productive investments so that revenue accrued from it could be been used for the uplift of the J&K Muslims, and profits could be channeled into creating infrastructure in the health and education sector. "The mismanagement of the Wakf properties hits one more when one looks at the profits and assets of the trusts of other religious communities of the state. Those communities have used their economic power to set up schools, hospitals and monetary help to the poor," sources said. |
