NGOs, consultancies flourish in JK
No end of duping by unregistered groups

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 7: The non-government organizations and consultancies continue to flourish in Jammu and Kashmir, while hundreds of unregistered ones many a times dupe the people.
There are several thousand NGOs in the state, while hundreds are operating without registering with the government. Most of the budget comes from individual donors and a portion is contributed by foreign contributors.
"There are always chances that unregistered ones may dupe the people," an official of Crime Branch said. The official said names of some local NGOs and consultancies have surfaced for allegedly duping the students over the years.
He said Crime Branch Jammu is investigating the role of several NGOs in the state.
Officials said Crime Branch has collected adequate evidence since August 2013 about the "involvement" of few NGOs for cheating students after promising them admissions in different colleges under PMSSS.
Crime Branch had also received complaints from Chief Vigilance Commissioner and Higher Education department that the students of JK have been cheated by extorting them money on the pretext of the centrally sponsored schemes.
Similarly, there are lot of consultancies who have been duping the people here.
Police sources said there have been scores of incidents where fake travel agencies and consultancies cheated the people in the state for the last five years.
Sources said many fake job consultancies were exposed for the last few years where they had promised unemployed and highly qualified youth dream jobs.
A police official said the administration had appealed people many times to remain cautious of fake tour and travel agencies, and consultancies from being duped.
"Despite that people get trapped and finally they dupe them," the official said.
These consultancies show youth dreams of working in Canada or Australia, UK, Saudi Arabia and duped the hapless youth of thousands of rupees while making them wait for never-to-happen possibilities.
A number of Kashmiris have gone to Saudi Arabia, promised well-earned jobs by consultancies here in reputed companies. However, around a dozen Kashmiris are stuck in Saudi Arabia, as they are being demanded a hefty amount by companies for releasing of their travel documents. "The consultancies showed us dream of working in Saudi Arabia and charged Rs 1.20 to Rs 1.50 lakh for facilitating well earned jobs, but we ended with working as labourer," a Kashmiri, from Saudi Arabi, said.
While the police official said the people should inquire, check registration of the travel agencies before they apply for any travel. "The police are keeping a close eye on it but still scores of duping incidents are coming to the fore," he added.
In 2016, a dubious recruitment agency also duped job aspirants after publishing advertisements in newspapers. The government also sealed its office at Wazir Bagh here on November 2. Its bank accounts were also seized.
