Plush park for elite in Gandhi Nagar, Bakshi Nagar park goes to dogs

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 5: The indifferent attitude of the department concerned in developing and maintaining public parks in Jammu is visible at the Bakshi Nagar Park (Ward No. 27), where long grass, dry leaves, and broken benches welcome the visitors. This is in contrast to Green Belt Park at Gandhi Nagar which is well maintained. The shabby condition of the Bakshi Nagar Park speaks volumes of the bias of the government which only takes care of the parks in posh areas. The Green Belt Park has been maintained because influential and rich families reside in the locality.
Rajesh Gupta, a resident of Ward No. 27, while criticizing the authority concerned, said the Bakshi Nagar park comes under the Jammu Municipal Corporation, which never takes care of it. "We gave many representations to the JMC for deploying a gardener so that the park could be maintained, but to no avail. The park has become a safe haven for boozers who occupy it the whole day, creating nuisance for the residents," Gupta said.
He said that despite lodging complaints with the police, nothing has been done to restrict entry of the unwanted elements into the park. He said that they don't expect authority to develop the park like Green Belt Park. "But at least necessary maintenance of the park should be done," he said. Another, resident Vipul Gupta informed that the park is without main a gate due to which outsiders enter without restriction. The water storage tank in the park has no water connection.
The benches placed in the park are broken; at some places the grass has not been trimmed; dry leaves have covered the park area which gives bad view of the locality. "Due to the shabby condition of the park, hardly anybody prefers to visit it," said Vipul.
