Over 100 banquet halls run in violation of norms in Jammu
5/12/2018 11:51:42 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 12: Both Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and Jammu Development Authority JDA have failed to take action against nearly 100 banquet halls which are operating in violation of norms within city limits for a long time.
As per details available with Early Times, there are 123 banquet halls, farmhouses, hotels and resorts operating within city limits of Jammu. Of them, over 100 banquet halls are functioning without seeking prior permission or no objection certificate from the JMC and JDA.
"Only two dozen banquet halls out of 123 have sufficient parking space for vehicles and rest of them are operating without parking space, while 20 banquet halls have got prior permission from competent authorities, but they have changed the design of buildings in violation of norms", the document reads.
The callous approach of law enforcement agencies could be gauged from the fact that in the February this year, just after assuming office of Traffic IGP, Basant Rath wrote a letter to the Deputy Commissioner Jammu, and Commissioner of JMC in which he clearly mentioned that majority of banquet halls operating within city limits have no adequate parking space. Rath sought legal action against them, but after lapse of sufficient time, no competent authority have initiated any action against them.
"Due to non-availability of adequate parking space in these banquet halls, a long queue of traffic jam can be seen outside the banquet halls during peak marriage season which creates chaos in smooth traffic movement. But the authorities seems least bothered about it," said sources in JMC.
The guidelines of Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Board (JKPCB) and Water Resources and Management Act 2010 makes it mandatory to discharge treated water into water bodies by establishing treatment plant inside the banquet halls. But most of banquets halls are running without treatment plants, posing threat to the fragile environment.
