SRINAGAR, May 13: Despite the fact that academic session 2018-19 got underway at the University of Kashmir some months back the appointment of contractual lecturers in some of the departments at the varsity is yet to be done.
The lack of faculty at these departments has seriously hampered the overall functioning with students being the ultimate sufferers. The class work has been badly impacted and ironically the people who mattered have not taken the concerned authorities to task.
Early Times has learnt from sources that contractual lecturers have not been appointed in some of the departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Contractual lecturers are yet to be appointed in the Sociology and Political Science departments with the same leading to multiple issues for the students.
"Appointment of contractual lecturers has been done in most of departments of all the faculties. However, the same has not been done with respect to Political Science and Sociology departments in Faculty of Social Sciences. This has resulted into a situation wherein the students are suffering for the want of teachers," said sources.
Sources said that selection lists of contractual lecturers at the Sociology and Political Science departments have been withheld due to large scale irregularities in the same. They said that selection lists should be finalized at the earliest so that the sense of discrimination that has crept among the educated youth is done away with.
Sources said that another reason for non-appointment of contractual lecturers in Sociology and Political Science departments is differences among the senior faculty members of both these departments. They said that lobbyism is at peak at the varsity and the same is leading to overall decay at the varsity.
"Large scale discrimination has been going on at the University of Kashmir with regard to the appointment of contractual lecturers. Governor N N Vohra who is the chancellor of University of Kashmir should take up this matter seriously so that discrimination is not meted out to the meritorious students of the valley," said sources.
It would be in place to mention here that Sociology department of University of Kashmir was in news recently as a contractual lecturer of the department joined the militant ranks and was subsequently killed in an encounter with police and security forces at Badigam in South Kashmir's Shopian district on May 6.
"The contractual lecturer namely Mohammad Rafi Bhat faced discrimination as well. There was a group of faculty members in the Sociology department that opposed the appointment of Rafi. It was due to this reason that Rafi had applied for the post of Assistant Professor at Central University of Hyderabad," said sources.
Source said that transparency has gone for a huge six at the University of Kashmir and there is complete mess at the varsity campus. The Chancellor should intervene in the matter so that there is no further decay at the campus. The University of Kashmir is losing its glory and it would take some serious efforts from the concerned stake holders so that the glory is restored, said sources.
