Mehbooba's PDP is over?
Many leaders, former MLAs could join Lone's camp
12/16/2018 11:17:25 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 16: Former CM Mehbooba Mufti's PDP is in complete disarray. Five MLAs have already jumped out of the sinking ship and many more are likely to follow, as they have come to believe that the "PDP has lost its appeal and sheen across the militant-infested Kashmir Valley" and that "they have no future in the PDP". Prominent among those who quit the PDP and severed ties with Mehbooba Mufti included former Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu.
Speculations are rife that all these five former MLAs and many others in the party could shake hands with People's Conference chief Sajad Lone, who has good relations with the BJP and the RSS. Of course, no formal announcement has been made so far but these leaders are, according to reports, "learnt to have discussed broader contours of the future engagement and are expected to join hands only after the formal announcement of assembly elections in the state is made".
The crisis in the PDP started soon after Mehbooba Mufti found herself stranded midway after the BJP pull the plug and walked out of the "unholy" alliance on June 19, 2018. Though she was aware that her alliance with the BJP will not lost long, she was caught unaware when faced with the reality.
It bears recalling the Mehbooba Mufti was in her office doing route office work and signing files when the Chief Secretary told her that the BJP had withdrawn its support to her government. She was left with no other option but to put in her papers and quit. It was after the imposition of the Governor's Rule on June 19 that she faced open revolt in her party. A group of party legislators even threatened to dump her before agreeing to the proposal of stitching an alliance with the BJP under the leadership of Sajad Lone.
Though Mehbooba Mufti could manage to prevent vertical split in the PDP, she has been constantly losing control over her party machinery with each passing day. On the ground, several party leaders, especially South Kashmir, are facing the heat and public anger. While Mehbooba Mufti herself was holding the charge, even then people had resented her decision to shake hands with the BJP and forge an alliance with her.
Inside reports suggested that even "Mehbooba Mufti is contemplating shifting her base from Anantnag assembly constituency ahead of the polls" and that "she had requested some of her trust lieutenants to zero in on a safe constituency from where she could fight next assembly elections".
All in all, it can be said that things are going from bad to worse for Mehbooba Mufti and her party with some PDP-watchers even suggesting that the "PDP is almost out".
