Land mafia grabs Govt land in Bajalta

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 28: Contrary to tall claims of the state government in tightening the noose on the habitual land grabbers active in and around Jammu, a huge chunk of prime government land in Bajalta area on the outskirts of the city has been encroached upon illegally by few influential people, however, the authorities concerned are reluctant to take any action in this regard for the reasons best known to them. According to the locals, several kanals of government land (Rakba Sarkar) near PHE Department's Overhead Tank in Bajalta Chak area has been encroached by some land grabbers.
"The land grabbers allegedly in connivance with the officials of various law enforcement agencies have encroached the land which according to revenue records falls under Rakba Sarkar category. The land in question is near PHE's Overhead Tank and a causeway," the locals said adding that construction work was also carried out on the land so as to give the impression that the activity was going on under a legal framework. People said that initially they thought that it was being done by a government agency to raise some structure, but later on it was found that the activity was done by few land grabbers, who they alleged are enjoying political as well as administrative patronage.
Locals further alleged that it was almost clear that some of the revenue officials, under whose jurisdiction the land falls, had a nexus with the land grabbers and a deal to this effect was already fixed between them.
"The land grabbers have already encroached vast stretches of government land in various other areas of Jammu by using all the tricks up their sleeves including inciting religious and caste sentiments," said locals of Bajalta Chak adding that if effective and timely steps are not initiated then this piece of state land as well as other land nearby would also vanish into thin air.
