Slight respite from cold in Kashmir as minimum temperature rises

Srinagar, Dec 30: Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, registered a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius compared to minus 7.2 degree Celsius the previous night, an official of the MeT Department here said.
He said there was an improvement in night temperature in the south Kashmir towns of Qazigund and Kokernag as they recorded a minimum of minus 1.8 degree Celsius and minus 2.7 degree Celsius, respectively. The ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir, a star attraction for tourists visiting the Valley during winter, recorded a low of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius - an increase from the previous night's minus 7.0 degrees Celsius, the official said.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir, which had witnessed a low of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius the previous night, registered the minimum of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, the official said. He said the hill resort of Pahalgam which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra during summer recorded a low of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius.
The resort had recorded a low of minus 8.3 degrees Celsius on the previous night, the official said. He said the mercury in Leh, in Ladakh region, settled at minus 12.2 while the temperature in Drass recorded a low if minus 12.8 degrees Celsius.
Drass was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu recorded a low of 6.5 degrees Celsius while Batote recorded 3.4, Banihal recorded minus 1.8, and Bhaderwah recorded 0.3 degree Celsius. The MeT Department has predicted light rain or snowfall at isolated places in the valley and Ladakh region on Sunday and at scattered places across the state over three days from Tuesday.
