Govt 'downplays' militant attack in Jammu city
'Police slept on intelligence inputs'
12/30/2018 10:38:10 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 30: Even as the blast near the General Bus Stand in Jammu on the night of December 29 was largely termed as "low intensity explosion", security experts said it was a "full-fledged militant attack" in the winter capital.
Official sources said it was a full-fledged militant attack on the police station in the area but that it was "downplayed to hide the security lapse" on the part of the state government.
Sources said the intelligence agencies associated with the union Home ministry had already shared information with the Jammu and Kashmir Police that the winter capital was on the radar of the Kashmiri militants who are "trying to establish sleeper cells in Jammu."
Sources said for around a month the police had been informed about the possible militant strike but that the police force was caught allegedly napping even outside its police station in the city.
When the grenade attack took place at around midnight near police station it is believed that naka parties assigned the night duty were allegedly sleeping.
Sources said the police have initiated an inquiry into the alleged lapse on the part of its force and that a team has constituted for the same.
A senior police official told Early Times that police were trying to see if the militants have managed to establish sleeper cells in the city of temples.
"Initial inputs suggest that the militants may be trying to establish sleeper cells," said a police official on the condition of anonymity.
He said the grenade might have been thrown from a speeding vehicle towards the police station.
Sources said it was only after the attack that the night patrol was intensified in the city.
"Special check posts have been established at all entry points of the winter capital. Patrol has been intensified at the International Border and Line of Control," sources said.
Pertinently it was the second attack on the Jammu bus stand this year.
Earlier, on May 24, militants hurled a grenade targeting a police gypsy parked at bus stand resulting in injuries to two policemen and a civilian.
Just a day after the militant attack at the bus stand, suspected militants were spotted in Bari Brahmana area. Government forces on Sunday launched a search operation following midnight shootout with unknown gunmen there.
An official said that a sentry at Ratnuchak military station noticed some suspicious movement around the facility following which he opened fire.
Meanwhile, army recovered arms and ammunition in Billawar tehsil of Kathua district today.
A police official said the matter was under investigation and that nothing could be said as of now.
