Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 30: At a time when state Governm-ent is making submissions before J&K High Court about taking effective measures of managing solid waste in cities and towns, Municipal Council Udham-pur continues to dump all the municipal solid waste and even dead animals in the local forest area on Jammu Srinagar highway.
Astoundingly, the concerned authorities of the pollution control board, Forest department and even the district administration have not taken any cognizance of the brazen violation of environment laws.
Recently on the directions of J&K High Court, Chief Secretary BVR Subramanyam along with Financial Commissioner Housing & Urban Development Department (HUDD) K B Aggarwal and Commissioner Secretary Environment & Forests Manoj K Devidi were given a presentation by an NGO namely Environmental Policy Group (EPG) regarding matters related to un scientific waste management.
On December Early Times had reported that sanitation staff of the Municipal council Udhampur were not only dumping the municipal waste in the forest area on the banks of Tawi but were burning the same and even carcass were also disposed off in the open.
Locals regretted that despite various media reports and representations given by several organizations, Municipal Council had been unscientifically dumping solid waste in Forest area near the banks of Tawi river on Jammu Srinagar National Highway. Sources in Health Department have revealed that patients in the area were suffering from intestinal and other similar diseases especially in summer months due to intake of unhygienic water.
