Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 2: Jammu and Kashmir Police is likely to get a major makeover, which will help its personnel in fighting crimes in the state. There are around 90,000 police personnel in the state who have been dealing with the law and order situation and fighting militancy in the valley. For the last few years, few thousand new recruitments have been made in the police departments.
The JK Police has been at the forefront in dealing with law and order in the state but are living in a "bad condition" as the government has not built the required infrastructure for them. However, the government has decided to take steps for improvisation of JK Police.
DGP Dilbag Singh said that police would take several measures for the convenience of people. "We want to be people friendly and vice-versa. We want police stations to be more people friendly. There will be women police in every police station for the convenience of women," he said. IGP Kashmir SP Pani said that 73 police stations have been made online. "We have taken several people friendly measures," he added. A police official said that government has taken a serious note that JK police personnel live in a bad condition. "Their number has increased but the commensurate infrastructure has not been built. The most serious aspect is the absence of adequate number of toilets in police lines and police stations," the official said.
"Government has also decided to install CCTV cameras in police stations. The JK Police will also be provided sophisticated weapons. There are several things which will improvise the JK Police," the official said.
Earlier, a CAG report has said that police stations had never been provided any specific financial resources to meet the expenditure like petrol, stationary etc. for investigation of crimes. "This has often resulted in the perception of police station and its personnel being corrupt. In this context, Rs 1 lac each to begin with in favour of all 193 police stations of the state were allocated as cost of investigation. Having the legitimate financial resource will certainly uplift the image of police stations in the minds of common masses," the report has said. It stated that J&K police has over a period of time turned itself into an "important force in fighting militancy and crime".
"Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has been supplementing the efforts and resources of the States, from time to time, by implementing the Scheme for MPF scheme)," it reads.
