Understaffed Private College owned by PDP legislator yet again hogs headlines for wrong reasons
College management continues to delay timely salary to employees

srinagar, Jan 8: A private college owned by a politician of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has yet again hogged the headlines for not one reason but more than that.
Despite offering four professional courses at the graduate level the SEM College located at Humhama in the outskirts of Srinagar city is understaffed. At the same time despite having very few staff members the college management has developed a habit of withholding the salary of its staff both teaching and non-teaching.
Early Times has learnt from sources that just 15 teachers have been engaged by the college management to teach professional courses like Bachelor of Education (B Ed), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) and Diploma in Nursing.
"The college is offering some of the technical courses under the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) component. It is also trying its best to get yet another course and that is Bachelor's programme in Nursing. The programme would be titled as Bachelors in Nursing (BSc in Nursing)," said sources.
Sources said that there are hardly eight non-teaching faculty members at the college, but still then the salary of staff is not paid on time. They said payment of salary is timely only on the occasion of religious festival of Eid celebrated twice in a year and known as Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha.
"The employees have not received the salary of November and December 2018 up to this moment although eight days of 2019 have already passed by. The college management has made it a habit of not paying salary to the employees on time. As a result of this the employees are pushed to the wall and there is no relief for them," said sources.
Sources said that the college is understaffed at least on the teaching faculty side adding that at least 30 teachers should be on rolls to teach such courses. They said that despite having very few staff members the college management for the reasons best known to them delays the payment of salary to its staff.
Sources said that University of Kashmir has also received complaints against the college with the varsity authorities contemplating to take some action in the matter. They said in the past as well complaints have been lodged against the college, but so far action has not been taken against it.
The SEM College is owned by PDP leader and Member of Legislative Council (MLC), Saif-ud-din Bhat. Since Bhat is busy with politics he has entrusted the responsibility of managing the college affairs on the shoulders of his wife.
Repeated attempts by Early Times to contact Bhat's wife bore no fruit since a female staff member said that mobile number (7780955802) is owned by Bhat's daughter who is outside the state and not by his wife (Farhat). This is contrary to the true-caller application status of the mobile user.
Dean College Development Council, University of Kashmir, Professor Nilofar Khan did not attend to the call made by this correspondent. She also did not bother to reply to the text message sent in this regard.
