Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 27: National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah seems desperate to grab the power again. He is the only one in Jammu and Kashmir, who wants Assembly elections to be held without any further delay.
A day after Governor's administration suggested to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir in November, Omar Abdullah reacted sharply. Taking to micro-blogging site twitter Omar said, "Most political parties in J&K were ready to take on the separatists & militants in Assembly elections by ignoring their threats of boycott of polls & violence. Unfortunately Modi ji & his handpicked team in J&K have decided to once again surrender to these forces #Shame."
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "It seems Omar has turned a blind eye towards the poll campaign, which his party leaders are carrying out in the Valley to win the ongoing Parliamentary elections."
He said that recently National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah while campaigning for his party's candidate in south Kashmir praised the so-called chief of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Yasin Malik for "choosing death over surrender." Farooq even saluted him for remaining steadfast on his resolve. "Omar' father is saluting separatists. On the other hand Omar wants to defeat separatists and militants. How strange!," the analyst added.
He said that Omar is creating a notion that he is the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and he can't wait anymore to rule the state. "It seems he is unaware about the fact that there are other parties in the fray too and they can't be written off."
A Kashmir watcher said that Governor's administration has cited valid reason for pushing the Assembly polls in J&K to November. "The first priority of the Government of India is to eliminate terrorists in the Valley. Besides terrorists, the GoI has launched a crackdown against the terrorist sympathizers and their conduits, who were funding unrest in the state," he added.
Another analyst said, "Assembly polls in J&K should not be held till the last terrorist is eliminated and their sympathizers are put behind the bars. Since the day Jammu and Kashmir has been placed directly under the Centre's rule things have changed drastically and it has been proven beyond doubt that political regimes were unable to handle the terrorists and separatists."
He said that former Chief Minister and the President of Peoples Democratic Party, Mehbooba Mufti, dancing to the tunes of the separatists during her tenure, led to the revival of militancy in Kashmir. "Somehow situation has been controlled during the past nine months of Centre's rule. These gains can't be reversed for appeasing Omar Abdullah. He should stop behaving like a kid and allow things to settle down," the analyst added.
