Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 14: Even as the cases of deadly coronavirus continue to rise in Kashmir, the people continue to defy lockdown thereby putting the government and the humanity to inconvenience whereas Jammu region has emerged largely disciplined.
Official sources said in the last around a week, there were numerous incidents where police had to detain violators of the lockdown in Kashmir. The violations have been so brazen that very recently a councilor in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation appealed the government to issue shoot at sight orders against those defying the lockdown.
In one of the cases, around half a dozen people were booked in south Kashmir when they were holding a religious congregation in violation of the norms.
In another such incident eight persons including a local religious preacher were taken into custody for having held a congregation on Friday in Narkara area on the outskirts of Srinagar.
The reports of violation have even been reported from north Kashmir where from atleast three persons have died till now due to the ailment. Over 20 persons were arrested in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district after they violated the prohibitory orders issued in connection with the spread of Covid-19 pandemic. In another case, despite orders from the district magistrate, on April 9 a group of people attempted to offer congregational late night prayers in Nesbal village of Sumbal. The police was left with no options but to arrest the villagers who violated section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by gathering at a mosque despite the clear orders from the administration in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Station House Officer (SHO), Sumbal, Muneeb Ul Islam confirmed to media the arrest of over two dozen persons.
A senior official told Early Times that people of Kashmir have been less cooperative towards the lockdown as compared to the people of Jammu division, where the outbreak is being seen as largely under control.
“Jammu people are showing the way towards discipline in fighting coronavirus and we all need to appreciate that,” the official said.
