Cyber Police surveillance aiding fight against COVID-19 outbreak in Kashmir
4/15/2020 2:16:49 PM

Srinagar: Cyber police in Kashmir is helping the administration to trace and monitor COVID19 positive cases, suspects and contacts besides aggressively tracking social media users some of whom were recently involved in circulation of fake government orders.
The cyber cell in past two months officials said has identified 15 suspects who were allegedly misusing social media and five of them were arrested as well. Among them two have managed to get bail, while others are still in custody.

The cyber police station in Kashmir registered its first FIR on February 17,2020 against people for defying government orders on social media. The FIR was registered within few weeks after the cell came into existence through a government notification
Since then the cell has registered eight FIRs, most of them filed during corona virus pandemic in J&K. The cyber cell has increased vigil on social media, which J&K government it its several orders has blamed for political unrest in Kashmir
The continued restrictions on high speed 4G mobile internet, government believes is also a deterrent against misuse of Internet and social media.

On April 14, J&K government’s spokesperson Rohit Kansal also tweeted that many users were impersonating his account and circulating fake orders and cyber police will take action against them.

The cyber cell is using the surveillance techniques during the COVID19 pandemic, which otherwise are employed for the anti-militancy operations in Kashmir. The cyber cell, which operates from Srinagar’s Cargo

where anti-militancy unit is also stationed, tracked and gave details of movement of many people who administration believed had hidden or misinformed about their travel or contact details. Also, many people who had visited Nizam-ud-din area in Delhi in February and March were also identified and tracked by the cyber cell.
