Early Times Report

JAMMU, June 16: It was on Monday that the AIIMS Coordination Committee Jammu (ACCJ) for the first time launched what could be termed as a direct attack on the BJP and charged it with "betraying its Jammu constituency". "The BJP hoodwinked the struggling people of Jammu region by making contradictory statements on the issue of AIIMS. It is an irony that the party let down those who gave this party a massive mandate hoping that it would end the age old discrimination with them and hand down an administration that would help them compensate for the losses they suffered under the earlier Kashmiri dominated dispensations. No effort on the part of BJP would succeed in weakening the ongoing movement in support of AIIMS for Jammu and the BJP is only becoming unpopular by the day by playing Kashmiri games in Jammu. Jammu region is the only region in the entire country which struggled and made sacrifices at regular intervals even for obtaining such institutions as Jammu University, Medical College, Engineering College, Dental College, Central University, Agriculture University, New Administrative Units, etc," he said while addressing the gathering at the venue of the chain hunger strike.
The ACCJ has been spearheading movement for the establishment of the sanctioned AIIMS for Jammu in Jammu as well as an early completion of the Tawi Artificial Lake Project since May 21. On Monday, the chairman of the ACCJ Abhinav Sharma, who also happens to the president of the premier organization of lawyers, JKHCBA, Jammu, did indicate that the ACCJ could take to radical means to force the anti-Jammu authorities in the state, especially the BJP leadership in Jammu and the BJP Government at the Centre, to concede its two immediate demands.
However, it was not expected that the ACCJ would implement its threat within 24 hours. On Tuesday, the members of the ACCJ met forhours together to take stock of the prevailing situation in Jammu province following the indifferent attitude of the authorities to its two very popular demands and decided to give a 72-hour-long bandh call across Jammu province and urged the people to make bandh on Friday,Saturday and Sunday a grand success. Members of the ACCJ in one voice condemned the negative attitude of the authorities and held them responsible for forcing them to take such an extreme step. "We were expecting that the authorities would appreciate the two massive bandhs in Jammu province on April 24 and May 27 and an equally impressive candle light protest march in Jammu on June 5 may and announce AIIMS for Jammu and restart work on war footing on the artificial lake project, but it didn't happen. Instead the authorities took the people of Jammu for a ride and imposed on them another bandh," the ACC members said, adding "the BJP will render itself completely unpopular in case it continued to play with the sensitivities of the struggling people of Jammu province".
Indeed, the proposed three-day-long bandh has been imposed on the people of Jammu province. Had the BJP appreciated the nature of the Jammu mandate, as also the fact that it became part of the state government for the first time in 67 years in Jammu & Kashmir because of the Jammu support and conceded the demands of the ACCJ, there would have been no protests, bandhs and chain hunger strike in Jammu. There is still time for the BJP to win over the estranged people of Jammu province by conceding their demands. Friday is still two days away and two days are sufficient time for it to rectify its mistakes. It is hoped that the BJP would rise to the occasion and make common cause with the struggling people of the region before it is too late.
