Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, July 24: Panic gripped the people of the summer capital as suspected militants carried out four grenade attacks on telecom showrooms and towers during the day. One person sustained injuries in one of the incidents.
Eye-witnesses told Early Times that the first attack took place at 11 in the morning when two suspected militants barged in the office of a showroom of the telecom company 'Aircel' at Karan Nagar. The militants asked the employees working at the outlet to come out and as the employees came out a grenade was lobbed towards the showroom.
The grenade attack led to panic among the residents and the people who carry out their business in the Karan Nagar area. Although, no one was injured in the incident but the grenade attack led to tremendous damages to the infrastructure in place at the telecom showroom. Some of the nearby shops also suffered damages in the incident. Minutes later the militants managed to enter the showroom of the telecom company 'Vodafone' and scolded the owner for not paying heed to the repeated diktats of closing down his showroom. Here too, the employees and the customers present at the outlet were asked to leave following which a grenade was lobbed towards the showroom. The grenades exploded with big bang at both the places with militants managing to escape.
The two successive grenade attacks led to panic and fear among the people and this spread to the nearby areas. Due to the panic some of the shopkeepers downed their shutters in the Karan Nagar, Gole Market and Kaka Sarie Chowk areas. Police and intelligence officials reached the areas where the grenade attacks took place and following which investigations were launched.
Searches were carried out some of the localities of the Karan Nagar area but up to the filing of this report no arrests had been made. Some of the employees working in the telecom showrooms were also questioned, but no one has been arrested.
Later in the day suspected militants attacked a BSNL mobile telecommunication tower at Shaheed Gunj locality. A person identified as Mohammad Faiq, a non-local painter was injured in this grenade attack. He was immediately rushed to SMHS hospital for treatment and his condition is stable. Police and security forces personnel arrived at the grenade spot and launched searches to nab the attackers.
In the fourth attack of the day militants targeted an 'Airtel' tower at Wazir Bagh area of the city with a grenade attack being carried out. The tower is installed in the house of Abdul Rahim Wani and in the attack, his Alto Car bearing registration number JK01V - 7441 was damaged.
Although no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for these grenade attacks so far the needle of suspicion is pointed towards the group of militants who carried out attacks on mobile towers and showrooms in North Kashmir especially Sopore some time back. It is suspected that the breakaway group of Hizbul Mujahideen led by Abdul Qayoom Najar alias Qayoom Najar has carried out the attacks.
