| Sec 144 to continue in Katra till tension subsides | | | Shiv Dev Thakur

KATRA, Dec 18: Restrictions under section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc) imposed in Katra, base camp of Mata Vaishnodevi Cave shrine in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir in view of the protests by labourers and porters against opening up of the new battery car track to the pilgrimage may be continued till the things get normal, official sources said.
According to sources though the normal activities in holy town Katra are normal on the third consecutive day of restrictions but the authorities still are apprehensive that the agitators may take advantage of the rush of pilgrims and visitors to the holy town - the base camp of Cave shrine of Shree Mata Vaishno Devi. Keeping in view the normalizations of the things on ground zero the authorities be it the district administration or the police authorities are going with restrictions in Katra for some more days, sources added.
Pertinently Labourers, Poniwalas and pithus under the banner of Katra Sangarsh Samiti have sat on fast unto death protesting against Shrine Board's decision of starting battery cars on new track which has as affected normal life in holy town for the last one week.
On December 16, late evening police forcefully lifted the protesting labourers and also resorted to lathicharge on them. And administration has imposed section 144 of CrPC in Katra town of Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir when the police allegedly resorted to lift the protesting labourers from the Dharna site on December 16. The administration has imposed Section 144 of CrPC as preventive measure," police sources said adding that the scuffle between the police and Poniwalas-Pithus took place on 16th December night after the cops shifted five of them, observing fast unto death, to hospital as their health condition deteriorated and 5 members of the Katra Sangharsh Samiti (KSS), who were sitting on fast unto death, were shifted to District Hospital Reasi in the mid-night.
While speaking to media persons, Shrine Board, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ajit Kumar Sahu said that no representative from Laborer's Union so far has approached them with any kind of demand. "What they exactly want, they even did not clear to the Shrine Board," the CEO added. He however, said that false rumours of purchase of battery cars by some vested interests are being spread in the town.
Meanwhile a senior police officer on anonymity briefly said, "Though situation is under control but the restriction on 'procession' , sloganeering will continue in holy town for some more days." He also said the restrictions have not affected the holy yatra which is smoothly functioning. |
