| 'Stopgap' arrangement finally ends for BJP's highest post | | Saffron party's J&K unit to get new chief on Dec 20 | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 18: After a delay of one month, the State BJP's unit is all set to have new president on December 20. Even as there are three contenders in race to wear this crown, the task and assignment is not going to be on proverbial lines of 'bed of roses' for the new chief.
Ensuing Local Bodies elections followed by Panchayat polls would be the litmus test for capability and capacity of the new president to deliver, no matter BJP is ruling ally in the Government. Formal election of the new president on Sunday would relieve the incumbent chief Jugal Kishore of this crucial responsibility, though he had virtually called it quits much earlier.
Consistent and conspicuous absence from the scene by incumbent president after becoming MP, there was a void which was filled by the general secretary organisation Ashok Koul who was handling the affairs and activities of the party as de facto chief as a stop gap arrangement. He shall have to call it a day soon after the new, formally elected president takes over. In the entire scenario, it is workers who are a jubilant lot for having a new State party chief on Sunday.
Sources said while it is only a matter of formality for having new president on board, of all the functionaries and hierarchy in place, it is the workers and cadres who are eagerly awaiting for this change of guard.
Having felt like orphans for quite some time, the workers of the party are an upbeat lot for they think there will be someone in chair of highest post whom they can approach and discuss the matters besides organising activities in an organised manner, sources said, adding that one of the main reason for workers' growing resentment was that there was no one in the chair at highest post to listen to their issues.
It was a big gap and void between workers and the party which had developed soon after Jugal Kishore became MP, said the sources, adding that this widened ironically when BJP assumed power for the first time in the State as not even MLAs, leave alone Ministers could sustain a much required rapport with the workers and cadres whose hard work clinched victory for BJP both in LS polls and Assembly elections. On account of his pre occupations as MP and for certain other reasons, Jugal Kishore had since lost interest in carrying forward the activities of the party as president.
All the meetings, activities during the past 5-6 months were being looked after by Ashok Koul, though his own post general secretary of organisation has not mandated him to come to fore, sources said while explaining the State of affairs in the party in absence of party chief.
However, with final countdown having begun for the new State chief, this is going to augur well for not just keeping up the morale of the workers but also for taking right decisions in right time and implementing them too at the ground level. |
