Wrong decisions breed grave political consequences
4/8/2014 10:58:24 PM
After nearly six years a senior PDP
leader, Muzaffar Hussain Baig,has
admitted that the withdrawal of support to the Congress led Government in Jammu and Kashmir in 2008 had not only been of great political consequences but also paved the way for the National Conference to share power with the Congress during the last about five and a half years. Baig has stated that the withdrawal of support to Congress in 2008 over the controversy of transfer of forest land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) had unpredictable political consequences for People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Baig is right when he comments on the success or failure of alliances indicating that at time alliances give birth to political stability and success in tasting power. The PDP leader has in support of his contention referred to Peoples' Conference chief, Sajjad Lone's decision not to forge an alliance with the PDP with the result Lone has fielded candidate in Baramulla constituency. And Baig is again right when he says that Sajjad Lone's decision to go alone in the poll fray may harm his party and that of the PDP too.
The decision to withdraw support from Congress was based on moral grounds although some people think it was politically wrong. No party can aspire to be in power always in a democratic process, but sometimes situations overtake any political party and despite using all the experience and wisdom some decisions have unpredictable consequences and the one that falls in this category related to PDP's withdrawal of support to the Congress. Well political pundits believe that had not the PDP withdrawan its support to the Congress in 2008 there was no possibility for the National Conference to regain power, although in alliance with the Congress, since 2009.
Between 2000 and 2001 the NC leadership had lost whatever favour it had in the Congress high command and that was the reason for Sonia Gandhi to forge an alliance with the PDP despite the fact that the PDP had won 16 seats against 27 by the NC in the 2002 Assembly elections. However, these very political pundits talk about another facet of the issue pertaining to PDP withdrawing support to the Congress. Possibly it was on the basis of the stand taken by the PDP against the land diversion issue that it could win 21 seats in the 2008 poll.
Well politics and political equations are invariably based on "ifs and buts. "Had not the Congress withdrawn its support to the Sheikh Abdullah led Government in 1977 the National Conference would have not won absolute majority in the 1977 Assembly election. And had the Congress allowed to keep Sheikh Abdullah headed Government, which had been sworn in on the basis of the support of the Congress soon after the 1975 Accord between Indira Gandhi and Sheikh Abdullah,to last for a few years more one would have witnessed unceremonial end of the NC.
In fact the Congress withdrawal infused new lease of life to the National Conference and its tallest leader, Sheikh Abdullah. In the same way had not the PDP withdrawn its support to the Congress - National Conference would have not been able to win 28 seats in the 2008 Assembly poll and by now it would have lost much of its weight and sheen.Possibly the PDP leadership took the decision to withdraw support to the Congress under the belief that it would win absolute majority in the Assembly so that it had no need to share power with the Congress.
Secondly, had not the Congress insisted on implementing the agreement that had been framed before the formation of a coalition Government in 2002 under which for first three years the Government would be headed by Mufti Mohd. Sayeed and for the remaining three years it would be headed by a Congress leader NC would have become part of the state's history.
Nothing is lost completely. It is time for top political leaders to weigh pros and cons of joining hands with this or that party because Jammu and Kashmir state may have to remain content with coalition rule.
