On aggressive note, Mufti demonstrates he is largest crowd puller | In last leg of campaign, PDP jolts coalition camp once again | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 8: As the campaigning came to close for Jammu-Poonch seat today, it is the PDP's aggressive campaign in last leg led by its Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed which has made coalition partners National Conference and Congress uncomfortable. Not only was the PDP patron seen as largest crowd puller in the rallies seen in twin border districts, but also steering the party and its candidate much ahead in the bustle and din of campaign in a gradual yet consistent manner, suggesting the party has consolidated significantly, much to the displeasure of both the alliance partners. The writing is clear on the political scene right now- victory or close to victory in Parliamentary polls, but consolidation for Assembly elections in the entire belt is the goal the party has achieved far ahead than any other party. In its well drawn out campaign strategy, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed campaign in the area in the last quarter aggressively, even though he visited various segments intermittently, which reinforced confidence in the entire rank and file of party in Jammu region. Mufti Sayeed's master stroke for the region in fact came much earlier by way of right choice of the candidate for this seat, sometime in August last year. A veteran enjoying socio-political status in Rajouri-Poonch belt Yash Pal Sharma's name was announced at a time when there was no whisper about Parliamentary polls, not to speak of determining candidates for the seats by other political parties. This move however gave edge to party in many ways, the biggest goal apart from securing the seat, for PDP being consolidating strength in the belt for Assembly elections due by the end of this year in J&K. While the move of Sharma's name was viewed by many as master stroke, it also came in for some apprehensions with critics skeptical about party's capacity to make dent in Congress and NC strongholds and bidding to dislodge both in some segments. Moving on at a slow pace for months, Yash Pal sharma backed by full party support proved the critics wrong after it organised huge public shows and rallies, much impressive than Congress and NC supported political shows. Not only this, the PDP election shows, even its rivals confide, have seen voluntary participation of people of both the communities, a gradually earned political incentive the benefits of which the party will accrue at the time of Assembly elections. Even the observers and political pundits who were earlier unsure of what PDP is pursuing could be far fetched proposition, now admit that this conviction and voluntary association of masses convinced by the party led by Mufti Sayeed is going to get translated in votes in coming months for the party. For the party at this juncture, victory in LS polls may not be on lines of target achieved, what it is eyeing is a much bigger goal of making inroads and breaking the traditional bastions retained for years by Congress and National Conference. This will not only mean gain in terms of Assembly seats and strength, but also changing the party's image from regional to one with base in both the regions of the state. |
