Jammu-Srinagar national highway in bad shape from Chenani to Nashri
4/8/2014 10:28:10 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 8: It seems that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has abandoned the Jammu-Srinagar national highway beyond Chenani in Udhampur district upto Nashri in Ramban district. Between Chenani and Nashri, a tunnel is being constructed to give short cut to the existing national highway but the work on the prestigious project will complete in 2016. From Chenani to Nashri via Patnitop, the condition of highway is very bad with potholes and small landslides at many places have disturbed the movement of vehicles.
Mostly the light motor vehicles get affected by potholes, which in indefinite number from Kud to Batote but the NHAI seems to be in deep slumber. Even the state government is not taking any cognizance of the situation and people have been left to suffer.
A traffic department official said that due to heavy snowfall during winters and now torrential rain has led to vast damage on the national highway. "As we remain busy in smoothing the traffic and clear the landslides wherever they occur, other kind of damage go unnoticed," the traffic official said. Due to the damage of road, vehicles move with snail's pace and when rush of vehicles increases, long jams are witnessed in this stretch. "As the government has announced two-way traffic on the national highway from April 10, it will burden the national highway. Potholes and other damages will play huge role in traffic jams and it will give tough time to officials," said Bansi Lal, a driver, who plies between Jamm-Ramban every day. This highway is under the observance of NHAI and they haven't taken any measures to address the issue. "Still the completion of tunnel will take more than two years and the NHAI has left the existing highway on the mercy of God. The government must take stringent measures to give relief to common man," said Showkat Ali, a resident of Batote.
