India lawmakers unlikely to oblige separatist Mirwaiz
An unachievable goal

JAMMU, Apr 11: The other day, self-styled chairman of the Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who earlier had issued an election boycott call, wrote an open letter to the people of India. The letter urged them to ask their representatives in the Indian Parliament to resolve the Kashmir issue. "An open letter to the people of India.
Along with your votes, give your elected leadership the task of resolving the Kashmir issue once and for all," he wrote. "India's elections have begun and you are exercising your votes to choose your new political representatives. Whoever you end up electing will be momentously placed to exercise real leadership and take the difficult decisions that are needed to shape a better course for the future of India and for peace in south Asia," he also wrote.
He further wrote thus: "There lay only 'two clear paths ahead, each with very different' outcomes...One is breaking from the past and pursuing a serious political and diplomatic engagement over Kashmir and another is relinquishing collective leadership responsibilities and choosing the same old default policy over Kashmir...Ultimately, the direction that the next elected leadership of India will take vis-a-vis the Kashmir issue largely depends on all of you, i.e. the people of India...The Kashmir issue continues to destroy life and obliterate the rights and aspirations of Kashmir people. Tragic" Kashmir conflict was also a direct threat to the interests and well being of the people of India. A peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue will unleash immense prosperity and economic benefits for India and for the entire south Asia region...Hurriyat is ready and willing to contribute positively and constructively towards this achievement. Let this process start sooner rather than later. Over an intensive period of one year, let all of the parties engage actively with each other...The previous visions and attempts by Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh could not materialize and did not sustain".
The letter of Mirwaiz was nothing but a desperate attempt of a desperate separatist to persuade the people of India and their representatives in the Parliament to pave way for another communal partition of India. The letter, which should have been thrown into the dustbin like the BJP-led NDA Government did to the NC's seditious autonomy resolution, evoked a favourable response from the so-called mainstream Kashmir-based political parties, but it was expected. After all, there is no fundamental difference between what Mirwaiz and others of his ilk had been advocating since decades and what the so-called mainstream Kashmiri leadership had been suggesting as a solution to the "Kashmir issue". If at all there was any difference, it was minor. Minor in the sense that while the separatists like Mirwaiz had been demanding the segregation not only of Kashmir but also of Jammu and Ladakh from India on purely religious grounds, the "mainstream" Kashmir parties had been demanding, and continue to demand, a step short of complete independence for the same dubious reasons.
Mirwaiz wants the people of India and the Indian Parliament to allow Jammu and Kashmir go out of India. No Government in New Delhi would ever endorse the divide-India solution and nor would the people of India ever allow another communal partition of India. The nation knows that the small Kashmir valley, the hub of anti-India activities, doesn't constitute the entire State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. It constitutes less than even two per cent of the state's land area. Similarly, the nation knows that a small section of Kashmiri society, which has been at the helm of affairs in the state since 1947, which is highly prosperous and well-entrenched, doesn't represent the general will. The fact of the matter is that Mirwaiz and co is striving to achieve the unachievable. He and others of his ilk must remember that the people of Kashmir will show them their rightful place this month and the next month through the power of ballot. The State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh was, is and shall ever be an integral part of India and those who would question the state's political status would be decimated by the people of the state itself.
