Condition of Govt schools pathetic but are private schools any good? | | | Shakeel A Khan SRINAGAR, Apr 11: The condition of the schools of the state, government as well as private, is pathetic with sub-standard facilities and poor teaching arrangement. This has made the future of the students dark. The schools opened after a long winter break but not on a high note and with requisite spirit. The government does not pay any attention to schools regarding the infrastructure and dearth of need basis academic arrangement. The postings at these schools have been made blindly. The teachers have the degrees, but lack the professional skill. "The teachers are seen arriving late, leaving early and roaming during the duty hours. They will never take care of the poor children. They are the masters of their own will. They enjoy because no leave is entertained against them. Why should they bother since their children stand admitted in the private schools," said Mohammad Ashraf from Soibugh-Budgam. The schools have turned good business units for some of the teachers. Mid day meals have hampered routine work of the schools. It is the new area of interest for the teachers as they own profit from it. The teachers are seen more inclined towards the mid day meals than academics. The infrastructure of the government run schools is so poor that it hardly attracts the attention of the students and parents. The situation is highly regrettable," said Arif a student from Sebdan-Budgam. Firdous, a student of Government Middle School for Boys, Daharmunah-Budgam said that their school is like a poultry farm. He said the classrooms aren't ventilated thus putting the students to immense trouble. "The school is surrounded by a pool of stagnant water. It produces a foul smell. It subjects us to physical and mental discomfort. Noises from the vehicles also make us suffer," said Firdous. He said the concerned authorities have never bothered to visit them and as such they continue to suffer. The government teachers get a handsome salary without doing much work. It has been observed that the teachers come and leave according to their wish with nobody holding them accountable. "The government school at Gouripora, Sanat Nagar is the living example of the education department's waywardness. The school is like a check post. Five female teachers are posted there with the number of students not exceeding 10. It has been going on for years now with no action taken so far," said Ishtiyaq, a resident of the area. Private sector is the other horrible face of the education system. Here the teachers are made to work like coolies. On an average a teacher teaches seven classes a day. The salary for month is just Rs. 3,000-4,000. "We are like slaves here. The atmosphere is not teacher friendly. Our meager salary cannot make both ends meet. We are going through terrible times. This is surely going to affect the performance of the teachers," said Bilal Ahmad Dar, a private school teacher from Chewa-Budgam. The management of the private schools plays with the emotions of the teachers. The management of the schools believes that a teacher is their slave. The state government has done nothing to safeguard the interests of private teachers. The result, now, is that the private schools fast losing their charm. |
