HC asks UOI to file report about release of Rs 30 Cr | Wullar lake conservation: | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 15: A Division Bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed Union of India to file status report regarding release of Rs 30 crore for conservation of Wullar Lake, India's largest fresh water lake in north Kashmir. The direction by the Division Bench comprising Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice Hasnain Massodi followed submission by Assistant Solicitor General S A Makroo that union of India on examining the utilization certificate will consider the further Rs 30 crore. "Same is required to be done at earliest so that execution of works in accordance with the approved Action Plan is not in any manner adversely affected," the division bench said. "Mr Makroo shall file status report on the next date about the release of funds," the division bench said. The division bench was hearing a PIL, seeking directions from the court to protect the water body. In last orders, the Court had directed the government to file status report on the number of staff with suitable qualification to be drawn from the closed projects here and deployed in conservation project. Earlier the court had asked Department of National River Conservation, working under the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, to identify a suitable person specialized and expert in water bodies to depute him to Srinagar to oversee the implementation of Wullar Lake Conservation Project. On the suggestions of Amicus Curiae for creation of one authority for all the water bodies in the state, Advocate General had informed the court that he has already set the ball rolling and the results may be evident in near future. |
