Touts of private labs, chemist shops on prowl in GMCH | Failure or Connivance? | | Avinash Azad JAMMU, Apr 15: Nexus between Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) staff and private clinical laboratories is depriving patients to get their clinical tests conducted inside the hospital at negligible rates. Moreover, the agents of private laboratories are roving round the clock in wards and hospital's laboratories' to get the tests advised by doctors privately. Sources in administration informed Early Times that the some officials of the hospital have entered into unholy nexus with some private laboratories and hence they coerce the patients to get their clinical tests outside the hospital. "Inspite of availability of various clinical tests in hospital at very nominal cost, the facility is not being given to patients", he said, adding that to get huge commission against the tests the staff was misleading the patients. He further said that quality of clinical tests being conducted by these labs was reportedly very poor, as huge difference in the findings hospital's clinical labs and private labs was observed recently. "Recently huge error was reported in tests conducted in hospital and outside", the sources said, adding that instead of fixing responsibility of erring officials who were not doing their job professionally, the administration has turned a blind eye. Police also tried to nab touts involved in sample collections for labs and also those who have been working for various chemist shops, said a police official at Police Post GMC, wishing anonymity. "We have received some complaints from the patients, some touts who have affiliations with private laboratories and chemist shop and they are forcing them to get their clinical and other tests conducted outside the hospital", he said. "Police is actively monitoring such elements, but owing to huge rush of patients and their attendants in hospital it is difficult to figure out these elements", he said adding that It was responsibility of hospital administration to check exploitation of patients. When contacted, Medical Superintendent, GMC Dr. Ravinder Rattan Paul acknowledged the menace of touts in the hospital. "Recently we noticed such persons in the hospital. HoDs of various departments have been asked to keep strict vigil on activities of such touts", he said adding that it is difficult to identify such elements in public areas, where thousands of people visit daily. |
