National Conference workers face music at hands of angry protesters in Shopian | Omar Abdullah's presence in town creates law & order problem | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Apr 15: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's visit to South Kashmir's Shopian district created law & order problem as angry protesters objected to Omar's visit and engaged in clashes with Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. Reports reaching here said as soon as the word spread in Shopian that Omar is scheduled to address election rally in the town, groups of youth appeared on the main road and raised strong protests against the holding of election rally. The protesters targeted the vehicles carrying National Conference workers and pelted stones on them. The protests in the area forced the shopkeepers to shut down their shops and leave the area in order to save themselves from any trouble. The town observed a complete shutdown with Omar's appearance not being liked by them following his controversial statement on the double rape and murder case of 2009. Groups of youth assembled on roads and pelted stones at police and CRPF personnel. The stone pelting by youth led to complete shutdown in the town with the maximum brunt borne by the shopkeepers of Gole Chowk, Bona Bazar and the market near the Tata Sumo. National Conference workers who were boarding the vehicles came under direct attack from the protesters and had to face the music. The angry youth pelted stones on the private vehicles carrying NC damaging several of them. A university vehicle also came under heavy stone pelting near Bona Bazar area. The vehicle suffered extensive damages and the driver identified as Mohammad Ashraf got injured. Ashraf was taken to District hospital Shopian where he received six stitches in his head. The protesters checked the identity cards of the people who had boarded the private vehicles in order to reach their respective destinations. As soon as somebody among them identified himself as NC worker, the protesters thrashed him severely and snatched his identity card. The police cops and CRPF personnel seemed to be helpless in this whole episode. It would be in place to mention here that Omar was scheduled to address the election rally for National Conference-Congress candidate for Anantnag Lok Sabha seat, Dr. Mehboob Beg at Ramnagri in Shopian. He addressed the rally only after the situation was brought under control by the police and CRPF personnel in the main Shopian town. Unconfirmed reports said that some stones were also pelted on Omar's cavalcade as well. In the meantime, residences of two NC workers were attacked while a scooter of a People's Democratic Party (PDP) was torched in a locality of Srinagar's old city during the intervening night. Reports said that unidentified persons attacked residential houses of two NC workers with stones in the Jamalata locality of Nawa Kadal area here. The attackers damaged the houses of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat and Mohammad Shafi Lone in the locality. Petrol bombs were also hurled on the houses of the two NC workers but nobody was injured in the incident. In a separate incident, scooter of Manzoor Ahmad, a PDP worker who hails from the same area was torched by unidentified persons. |
